1. Abraham SAMPSON, son of Laurence SAMPSON and Mary SHABERY, was christened on 14 Aug 1614
in Campton, Bedfordshire, England and died Prob. Shortly before 1701 at age 87.
• First records: 4 Dec 1638, Duxbury, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. Presented at the meeting house for
striking John Washburn, Jr.
• Civic service: 1648: Surveyor of highways for Duxbury. Constable 1653.
• Land: 1645: One of the original grantees of Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony.
1662: One of four former servants and ancient freemmen given land at Saconnet Neck.
• Civil fines: 1646/47, 1662/63: Drunkeness.
• Two wives?: Clarence Almon Torrey, PhD, and Robert S. Wakefield, F.A.S.G., make the strong case
for Abraham Sampson having two wives: the first being an unidentified daughter of his Duxbury
neighbor Lt. Nash and the second being completely unidentified.
Abraham married Unidentified given name NASH, daughter of Lt. Samuel NASH and Unidentified
UNKNOWN, by 1625. Unidentified was born circa 1625 in England and died circa 1655 at age 30.
• Identity: Robert Charles Anderson in his 2004 publication "The Pilgrim Migration: Immigrants to
Plymouth Colony 1620-1633" states "The statement has appeared in print more than once that Esther,
wife successively of Samuel Sampson and John Soule, was a daughter of Samuel Nash [NEHGR 52:76;
MD 3:121], but this is an error, based on losing a generation by misreading the will of Samuel Nash
[NEHGR 56:205]."
• Date of Death: Circa 1655 causes a problem in that Abraham's daughter Mary, said to hae been born
circa 1650, is thought to be the daughter of the second wife.

1669. Esther was born on 6 Mar 1640 in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, died on 12 Sep 1735 in
Duxbury, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts at age 95, and was buried in Old Cemetery (Standish), Chestnut St.,
South Duxbury, MA.
• Misc.: Granted pension from the town of Duxbury, a sum of five pounds, which was paid to her for two
years following the death of her husband [Samuel Sampson] and until the time she remarried."

• Date of Birth: Hutchinson says 1650.
• Parentage: Charles Almon Torrey states that Mary was actually the daughter of Abraham Sampson's
wife, the unidentified daughter of Lt. Samuel Nash. He states this because she is left a bequest by Lt.
Nash who would have been her grandfather through the unidentified Nash wife of Abraham. Torrey
backs this up with the fact that Lt. Nash left no bequests to Abraham Sampson's sons George, Abraham
and Isaac who were children by Abraham's other completely unidentified wife. The date of birth given
Mary would also suggest she was the granddaughter of Nash.
Mary married Samuel HOWLAND, son of Henry HOWLAND and Mary UNKNOWN, from circa 1670 to
1672. Samuel was born circa 1638 and died bet. Feb 1715 (N.S.) and 18 Apr 1716.
• Year of Birth: Bumpus says 1640.
• Will written: Feb 1715 (N.S.), Freetown, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. Proven 7 May 1716. Names wife
Mary; three daughters (Mary Rounsvell, Alce [sic] Howland, and Content Sandford); five sons
(Samuel, John, Abraham, Joshua, and Gershom) who are said to have received land already; a
granddaughter, Mary Martin; and surviving children (not named) of son Isaac. Widow Mary and son
John appointed executors.
