INTRODUCTION The History of Zentangle Zentangle® is a new style of drawing in deliberate steps with a pre-learned toolkit of patterns. This art form has been developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. The story of how it started is an amazing example of how something beautiful is born when two ‘fields’ or ‘careers’ overlap or when people with different ideas share and build something new. On their website Rick and Maria share their story. Maria was explaining to Rick how when she drew background images on a manuscript she was working on, she felt ‘free’ and ‘focused’. He explained that these were the basic feelings one tried to achieve while meditating and so they started to develop the Zentangle method to aid people to achieve a sense of serenity and focus while drawing simple patterns. What I love most about this art form is that all the patterns are based on simple lines, circles and shapes. Anyone can do it. The beauty of Zentangle lies in the way these patterns evolve from their simple building blocks. Different patterns are put together to create small ‘tiles’ or square drawings. This new approach to art is structured and breaks down seemingly impossible to replicate pieces of art into doable steps. Coming from a mathematical and engineering background with a passion for the arts, I absolutely love this idea! Big ‘problems’ are solved by breaking them down into smaller actionable steps. Large products are developed by breaking down the plan into step-by-step bullets. Now you can create beautiful pieces of art by learning a few simple patterns! How awesome! The Zentangle approach encourages you to focus on each stroke and make it deliberate. Ideally you are not to use an eraser and any mistake made is a new opportunity to change the direction of the piece. This is the creative freedom of the Zentangle method. The freedom and rules go hand in hand making this an amazing art form for left and right brained people. The joy is in the journey of creating and that is what you are encouraged to enjoy and focus on. The outcome will automatically be beautiful and you do not have to worry about it. The entire process should be carried out without any predetermined notions. Just let the art take you where it does and you’ll end up in a beautiful place.
