List of Basic School Type Definitions
Kindergarten/Pre-school
The kindergarten/pre-school program involves either a one-year or two-year pre-formal education program. This normally precedes the
first year of formal primary education.
Primary Education
The primary educational program involves the initial stage offormal education. For the purposes of the World Report, primary education
is defined as the first eight (8) years of formal education.
Secondary Education
The secondary educational program primarily focuses of the formal preparation of students for university entrance. For the purposes of
the World Report secondary education is defined as years 9 through 12 or 13 of formal education. A graduate from these level should be
eligible for entrance to a national university.
Worker-training Education
The worker-training educational programs are comprised of a variety of non-traditional programs. These programs generally provide
students with training at a certificate or a diploma level, equipping them with job entry skills. Although entrance to a worker-training
institution is based on defined requirements, entrance to these programs is traditionally not equivalent to that of a college or university.
Credits earned in worker-training education are not usually transferable to academic programs offered by colleges/universities. It is
expected that all programs will be a minimum of one academic year in length.
Tertiary Education
The tertiary education program is divided into two distinct levels: under-graduate and the graduate levels. The under-graduate programs
are normally considered as college and/or university work up to the completion of the Baccalaureate Degree level. This could include
certificate, diploma, associate, and/or bachelor degree programs. The graduate programs are normally considered as programs which
require a student to hold an earned bachelor degree as a minimum entrance requirement. A student will normally graduate with a masters
or doctorate degree upon completion of this course of studies. These programs are normally not referred to in terms of a number of years
in length. Institutions are often referred to as offering a certain number of under-graduate and/or graduate programs each having
majors/specialties.
