Based on these descriptions, Marquis re¬ searchers developed a working list of frontier topics covering fields from agriculture to zoology. This working list was sent to 1,500 scientists, including editors of scholarly scientific journals, for additions, deletions, and other changes and comments. The scientists’ comments were embodied in the expanded final list of frontier subspecialties, which became the basis for definition of frontiers of science in each field. For the second edition, the subspecialty list has been revised and updated, based on recommendations from members of the Board of Advisors and from other scientists. The list was sent to each biographee, who was asked to select one or two subspecialties that reflected personal research or work interest. Thus, the comprehensive Index and the sketches contain two subspecialty entries for many listees in Who’s Who in Frontiers of Science and Technology. If a subspecialty was found in more than one field of science, the name of the field was appended to the subspecialty description in the sketch, as in Biomass (agriculture) and Biomass (energy science and technology). Biographees with subspecialties not encom¬ passed in the list are found in the Index at the end of each major field under the category “Other.” vi
