resources.Thisincludesfosteringthewisestuseofourlandandwaterresources,protectingourfishandwildlife,preservingtheenvironmentaland
culturalvaluesofournationalparksandhistoricalplaces,andprovidingfortheenjoymentoflifethroughoutdoorrecreation.TheDepartmentassesses
ourenergyandmineralresourcesandworkstoassurethattheirdevelopmentisinthebestinterestofallourpeople.TheDepartmentalsohasamajor
responsibilityforAmericanIndianreservationcommunitiesandforpeoplewholiveinIslandTerritoriesunderU.S.administration.

Decision
IapprovetheFinalRecordofDecisionfortheFinalEnvironmentalImpactStatement
addressingtheVegetationTreatmentProgramonBLM-administeredlandsinwestern
Oregon(1989)anditsappropriateapplicationasprovidedherein.
Thepublicisadvisedthatanintegratedapproach,usingallavailabletreatment
methods,willbeimplementedinwesternOregon. Thisincludestheuseofmanual,
mechanical,biological,prescribedfire,andherbicidetreatments. Annually,an
estimated90,200acrescouldreceivevegetativetreatment. Nomorethan8,800acres
wouldbetreatedwithherbicidesinanyoneyear.
Implementationofthisprogramisdependentontheleveloffundingreceivedannually
andtheallocationsdeterminedbyprogrampriorityinspecificlanduseplans. Site-
specificenvironmentalanalysiswillprecedeprojectimplementationtoevaluatethe
needfortreatment,identifyprojectimpacts,anddesignappropriatemeasuresspecific
totheselectedtreatmentmethod.
