(eds) (cid:164) 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK. ISBN 978-1-138-02820-3 Preface The International Mining Forum is a meeting of scientists and professionals who, together with the organizers, establish ambitious aims to confront ideas and experiences, evaluate implemented solu- tions, and discuss new ideas that might change the image of the mining industry. The gained technical and technological experience allowed for development of design methods and improvement of technology. In particular it was related with shaft lining design methods. The present research try to explain these problems to designers, including demonstration that design of underground excavations lining (particularly shaft lining) should be considered as a process of mod- ifications of procedures accompanying gathering knowledge about properties of the rock mass, in- cluding lining material. The International Mining Forum is an event accompanying the School of Underground Mining, organized since 1992 under the auspices of AGH – University of Science and Technology and the Institute of Mineral Economy and Energy of the Polish Academy of Sciences of Cracow. The topics presented during the session will be related to the implementation and operation of shaft facilities. Each of the interesting presentations will be in the range of discussion topics, such as geological and hydrogeological conditions and the technical operation of shafts, overview of con- struction technology, basic issues related to the design process of sinking and shafts lining, direc- tions aimed at modernizing the technologies of sinking. The organizers would like to express their gratitude to all persons, companies and institutions, who contributed to bringing the Forum into being. We hope that the Forum will contribute to the exchange of interesting experiences and establish- ing new acquaintances and friendships.
