There are social, health, moral, and economic benefits for the individuals and society as a whole in being able to address issues of domestic violence in all its permutations and complexities before they reach the boiling point. It is our contention in this bookthataneffectiveinterventionfordomesticviolencecanonlytakeplace byconsideringthismultiplicity of factors in itsdesign, with theunderstand- ing that the application of a specific response should be guided first by ensuring the physical safety and psychological need of the victim(s) at the time of the intervention. By victim we are referring to spouses or partners andtheirchildrenandothervulnerableindividualslikelytobevictimizedin thedomesticviolencesituation. Thechaptersincludedinthisvolumewereselectedtoprovidefundamen- tal information about domestic violence in today’s complex society where thedefinitionoffamilyhasgonethroughamajortransformation.Theywere selected (1) to provide a comprehensive discussion of different models uti- lizedtounderstanddomesticviolenceincidents;(2)tohighlightitscomplex- ity, usually related to the intersectionality of issues normally present in any domestic violence incident; and (3) to provide explanations that reflect that complexityandthatcanserveasaguidetothedevelopmentanddesigningof more efficient and targeted intervention programs for that population. We recognize that we could not cover all aspects of domestic violence and its consequences on its victims/perpetrators; nevertheless, we have included what we consider the most critical issues that should be examined.
