In several respects, how ever, I have streamlined the notes, in an attempt to place less of a barrier of scholarship between the reader and the Latin (so, for example, I refrain from discussing theories and interpretations that seem to me manifestly incorrect, and I do not raise the question of whether diction is poetical, prosaic, colloquial, etc., unless it has a substantial bearing on appreciation). One element receives rather more attention than before, and that is structure. As my research progressed, it became clearer and clearer to me that in book Tibullus regarded this as an important aspect of his 2 poetry. Although some of the links I propose may not have been deliberate, I do feel that most of them will have been, and although the reader may not be convinced by some individual suggestions and conclusions, I would assert that cumulatively they have validity. However, I accept that not all will be per suaded by or interested in such material, and so, for the benefit of those who will not be, I have restricted my remarks on the overall structure of individual elegies to a Structural Appendix and my observations on ring-composition within sections of poems to the final paragraphs of the sectional notes. The same wish to spare uninterested readers lies behind my decision to group together, normally in the final paragraphs of the notes, my observations and suggestions in connection with style and sound. There remains the pleasant duty of recording my debts of thanks. I must acknowledge a generous grant from the Arts Research Board of l\1cl\1aster University. Professor G. C. Galinsky has kindly allowed me to cite the sigla employed in LENZ-GALJNSKY. I was extremely fortunate in being able to submit this work for comment to three experts and friends J. Professor H. D. Jocelyn, Mr A. G. Lee, and Professor C. McKeown. It has benefited greatly from their thorough, penet rating, and stimulating criticism, given very generously at times vm PREFACE when they themselves were extremely busy, although, of they should not be held responsible for such errors and infelicities as remain. I must also thank the editorial staff of the Oxford University Press for the exemplary diligence, vigilance, and efficiency they have shown in the editing of this book. Finally, as ever I owe a very real debt of gratitude to my wife for her under I standing and support and for her help over a prolonged period in word-processing and many other spheres.
