Outstandingintheirfieldsofresearch,ByrnesandLindquisthavemadesignif- icant advances in systems & control and left an indelible mark on a long list of colleaguesandPhDstudents.Ascoeditorsofthiscollection,wehavetriedtoshow- casepartsofthisexcitinginteractionandcongratulatebothByrnesandLindquistfor theiryearsofsuccessfulresearchandashiningcareer. About a quarter of a century ago, Anders Lindquist came to KTH to provide newleadershipfortheDivisionofOptimizationandSystemsTheory.In1985Chris spent his sabbatical leave at KTH, and the two of them organizedthe 7th Interna- tional Symposiumon the Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems (MTNS 85) at KTH that showcased both the field and a thriving academic division at the universityandhighlightedthestartofalonglastingcollaborationbetweenthetwo. Chris Byrnes was recruited recently as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at KTH tocontinuewhathasnowbecomeaverysuccessfulresearchprogram,someresults fromwhichwillbementionedbelow. ChrisByrnes’scareerbeganasaPhDstudentofMarshallStone,fromwhomhe learnedthatagoodapproachtodoingresearchhastobeginwithanunderstandingof whatmakestheproblemhardandmustultimatelybringtherightmixtureofapplied andpuremathematicstechniquestobearontheproblem.What is characteristicof hiscontributionsistheunanticipatedapplicationofseeminglyunrelatedbranchesof puremathematics.Thiswasexhibitedearlyinhiscareerwiththeapplicationoftech- niquesfromalgebraicgeometrytosolvesomelong-standingopenproblems,suchas pole-placementbyoutputfeedback,inclassicallinearcontrolsystems.Incharacter- istic form, he made this seem understandableand inevitable because “the Laplace transformturns the analysis of linear differentialsystems into the algebraof ratio- nal functions.” In collaboration with Alberto Isidori, he helped transform modern nonlinearcontrolsystemsusingnonlineardynamicsandthegeometryofmanifolds,
