J E The VR Book R A Human-Centered Design for Virtual Reality L D The VR Book Jason Jerald, Ph.D., NextGen Interactions “The definitive guide for creating VR user interactions.” Human-Centered Design —Amir Rubin, Co-Founder and CEO of Sixense “Conceptually comprehensive, yet at the same time practical and grounded in real- for Virtual Reality world experience.“ —Paul Mlyniec, President of Digital ArtForms and father of MakeVR Dr. Jerald has recognized a great need in our community and filled it. The VR Book is T a scholarly and comprehensive treatment of the user interface dynamics surrounding H the development and application of virtual reality. I have made it a required reading for my students and research colleagues. Well done! E —Prof. Tom Furness, University of Washington, VR Pioneer and Founder of HIT Lab International and the Virtual World Society V R Virtual reality (VR) can provide our minds with direct access to digital media in a way that seemingly has no limits. However, creating compelling VR experiences is an incredibly com- plex challenge. When VR is done well, the results are brilliant and pleasurable experiences B that go beyond what we can do in the real world. When VR is done badly, not only is the sys- O tem frustrating to use, but it can result in sickness. There are many causes of bad VR; some failures come from the limitations of technology, but many come from a lack of understanding O perception, interaction, design principles, and real users. K This book discusses these issues by emphasizing the human element of VR. The fact is, if we do not get the human element correct, then no amount of technology will make VR any- thing more than an interesting tool confined to research laboratories. Even when VR principles are fully understood, the first implementation is rarely novel and almost never ideal due to the complex nature of VR and the countless possibilities that can be created. The VR principles A discussed in this book will enable readers to intelligently experiment with the rules and itera- C M tively design towards innovative experiences. | M ABOUT ACM BOOKS O Jason Jerald, Ph.D. R G ACM Books is a new series of high quality books for A M the computer science community, published by ACM N &Cin collaboration with Morgan & Claypool Publishers. & ACM Books publications are widely distributed in C L both print and digital formats through booksellers ISBN: 978-1-97000-112-9 A M and to libraries (and library consortia) and individual ACM members via the ACM 90000 Y P &C Digital Library platform.
