NUTRITIONANDEVALUATION CONTRACT53-3198-4-038 SPRING 1998 ream The Story of Nutrition: Case Studies of the Implementation Pilot Communities ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This report is the result of collaborative efforts from many skilled researchers. Technical guidance was provided by Craig Lefebvre at Prospect Associates and David Maklan at Westat, Inc. Surveys were developed and entered by Kirstin Moesinger, Ellen Herbold, Suzanne McNutt, Janice Hall, Caren Celebuski, Sharon Hammond, and Laura Flicker, all of Westat. Data collection was directed by Danny McGoldrick of Prospect, and was conducted by Laura Biesiadecki, Elyse Levine, Pam Cusick, Erin Dabbs, Stephanie Kipnis, Amy Buehler, Peggy Johnson, and Laura Goodman. Teacher training materials were developed and presented by Amber Thornton, Debbie Lurie, Rebecca Strub, Laura Goodman, and Gael O'Sullivan. Jackie Smollar, an independent consultant, also provided strategic input on process and interview guides and collected data in the field. Leslie Lytle, Sarah Samuels, and Jean Goldberg were consulted on the survey instruments for parents, teachers, and students. Pat Licodo of Westat supervised telephone interviews with parents. Surveys were tabulated by David Lowe and Tom Milke with programming assistance from Bill Hartley and Fauzia Tirmazi. We would like to acknowledge the staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Analysis and Evaluation (OAE) who reviewed progress on the data collection, analyses, and preliminary reports. They are Carol Olander, Jill Randell, Mike Fishman, Jay Hirschman, Pat McKinney, and John Endahl. Finally, we thank the Team Nutrition Coordinators at the seven pilot implementation districts, whose efforts and enthusiasm paved the way for this comprehensive evaluation. They are: Julia L. M. Thorius, Julie A. Rosin, and Theresa Nece of DeMoines Independent Community Schools; Delores D. Coffey of Hamblen County Schools; Lisa Griffin and Nelda Downer of Tulsa Public Schools; Brenda Padilla and Hal Bush of Vacaville Unified School Districts; Margaret Burton, Anne Marie Sheehan, and Rose Ann Gianelli of Lawrence Public Schools; Samuel S. Petracca of Passaic Board of Education; and Mary Ann Weber and Esther Monclova Butler of Cleveland Public Schools. In addition, this process evaluation could not have been completed without the cooperation of the principals, teachers, and food service staff that participated in the pilot implementation program.
