Since thefollowingpageswere firstwritten and pub- lished inFrench, manyattemptshave been madein Russia to effect reforms in the clergy, such as the abolition ofcaste, the improvement of schools, and the granting to bishops and priests a little more independence. We bynomeanscallinquestionthegoodinten- tions that prompted these reforms; but we must remark, thatsomehavebeen decreedon paperwith- out bringing about any sensible and real change, and theothers leave untouched the foundationsand roots of the evil we have sought to disclose. In everycase, manyyearsmustelapsebeforeanychange can be felt as their result. After these reforms, the deigy is still a caste separated from the rest of the nation, and the Church is still in absolute dependence on the State. That there maybe in Russia a certain tendency tomoTetowardstheseparationof ChorchandState, we do not deny; nor do we dlspnte that in time this tendency of men's minds may lead to radical changes in the mntnal relations of the Russian Goverumeut and the official Church; but, hitherto, nothing has been done in this direction, and this nnfortnnate Chnrch, attacked on the one side by the Ilaskol, and on the other by ^ihUism, seems, notwithstanding all appearances of prosperity, des- tined speedily to perish. Strangely should we de- ceive oursdves if we failed to see that these twin plagues of the contemporaneons Russian Church have developed, and continue to develop themselves solelyinconsequenceoftheabsorptionoftheChurch by the State; and until a remedy shall have been appliedtothis fundamentalevil, reformerswillhave accomplished nothing.
