They wanted a book that would act as a menu of choices, with “recipes,” which would allow them to select and customize each design element of a mitten—edgings, cuffs, thumbs, and tops—and combine them with confidence for a completely unique creation. This is that book. This book is divided into four parts: Designing Your Own Mittens, Components, Techniques, and Patterns. In the Designing Your Own Mittens section, you’ll find guidance for all the aesthetic and technical choices that go into creating your own personal mitten patterns. In the Components section, you'll find a gallery of styles for edge treatments, cuffs, thumb constructions, and top shapings. Each example is accompanied by the instructions for its execution. Mix and match to your heart's content to make the mittens of your dreams. In the Techniques chapter, you'll find specific instructions for constructing, embellishing, measuring, and fitting these pieces. All the nuts and bolts you need are here. Need a little inspiration? Just want to follow a traditional mitten recipe? Then head over to the Patterns section, where you’ll find twenty complete patterns, just waiting for your personal touches. I hope you’ll enjoy this book, both as a handy reference guide and as a design collection. Happy knitting; you’re in good hands. 7 HOW TO USE THIS BOOK How do you like to knit your mittens? Mittens in this book can be made in any number of ways: You can choose to follow a pattern from the Patterns * section exactly (see page 66). You can customize an existing pattern in the Patterns * section (see page 66) by changing one or more of its elements using the Components menu (see page 22) and Techniques section (see page 50). You can start from the ground up and invent your * own design using a combination of choices from the Components section (see page 22) and adjusting them to fit your yarn and gauge. FOLLOW A PATTERN In the Patterns section on page 66, you’ll find twenty finished patterns to follow, which offer instructions using a set yarn and gauge. You can knit these designs just as they appear, or substitute the colors and yarns you prefer. The collection includes patterns inspired by traditional knitting styles from around the world, modern interpretations of classic mittens, and brand-new designs to challenge and inspire you. There are mittens to knit from the bottom up, from the top down, and from side to side. The 8 THE MITTEN HANDBOOK
