Acknowledgments I would like to thank Gregg and Mary Catherine for putting up with my absence (again!) while I completed another project; Craig & Angelika, for their hard work raising a family like normal people should; Debbie Suggs, for contributing Chapters 11 and 16; Alan Benson, for contributing Chapters 18 and 20; Bailey for keeping me company and alerting me when the FedEx truck pulled up with more page proofs; and my wife Virginia, who continues to remind me when it's time to beam to the planet surface and commune with my people. Finally, I would like to thank the following people who helped make this book a reality: development editor Martin V. Minner, for guiding the revision of this book; copy editor Judy Flynn, for ensuring it is grammatically correct; proofreader Tom Collins, for catching all those little errors that made it past everyone else (including me); desktop publisher Scott Hosa, for laying it all out and making it look great; acquisitions editor JJ Holm, for signing me up for this project; traffic coordinator Becky Steele, for chaperoning me through the FTP site changeover; CD-ROM specialist Ginny Phelps, for assembling the Companion CD-ROM; project editor Paul Cory, for keeping it all on track; and all the other Ventana folks whose hard work makes a complicated process seem simple. -MRB Contents Introduction ................................................................................................ xix P A R T I The Operating System Chapter 1 Operating System Basics ............................................................................. 1 What Does the Operating System Do? ...................................................... 2 Parts of the Operating System .................................................................... 3 Using the Operating System ....................................................................... 6 Basic Macintosh Operations ....................................................................... 7 The Graphical User Interface 8 The Mouse & Cursors 12 Files & Folders 13 Floppy Disks 14 Macintosh Utilities 15 Data Transfer Methods .......... :. .................................................................. 21 Cut & Paste: Using the Clipboard & the Scrapbook 22 Macintosh Drag & Drop 25 Chapter 2 The System Folder ...................................................................................... 29 The Mac OS 8 System Folder .................................................................... 31 The Apple Menu Folder 33 The Control Panels Folder 35 The Extensions Folder 36 The Fonts Folder 40 The Preferences Folder 40 The Startup Items Folder 41 The System File ........................................................................................... 42 System File Access 42 Modifying the System Folder 43 Adding Files to the System Folder 45 Deleting Files From the System Folder 46 Chapter 3 The Finder & Desktop ................................................................................. 49 New Finder Menus .................................................................................... 51 Finder Windows ......................................................................................... 59 Finder Preferences 61 The View Menu 65 ..
