The publication of this catalogue provides me with an occasion to thank again the families
of Edward and W.S. Maxwell for their foresight in preserving the personal libraries of the
two architects, and for their generosity in donating them to McGill. The family of the late
Stirling Maxwell and Edward's grandson, Henry Yates, building upon the original donation
by the late Mrs. Edward Maxwell, have contributed to make Edward's library even more
complete. The munificence of William's daughter, Mary Maxwell Rabbani, was not
confined soley to the gift of the architectural library of her father, but furthermore included
its transfer from Israel to Montreal. I am grateful also for her personal kindness and
hospitality to me during my work with her in Haifa. To her staff there I am sincerely
grateful for their assistance and most especially to Violette Nakhjavani, Nell Golden, and
Ken Gratton.
My own colleagues at the Blackader-Lauterman Library worked assiduously to compile the
