STATE COLLEGE Salem STATE ICOL Clipper 2001 - 2001 Clipper Yearbook Dedication The Program Council ofSalem State Collegeis pleased to dedicate the 2001 ClipperYearbookto the "FirstLadyof Salem State Theatre" - Charlotte Ettinger. ProfessorEttingercame to Salem State College onAugust28, 1965. Fresh from her graduate assistant teachingat EmersonCollege, Ettingerwas courted byFrancis Callan, Head ofthe Speech Department, tojoin the faculty. Ettinger said, "Frankand I had a mutual acting and directingexperience atMarblehead Little Theater. He saw myworkand knewhow much Ibelieved inwhatI was studyingand teaching." Once a positionbecame available at the college, she tookit, and the restis a partoflocal educationalhistory. Charlotte's contributions to the Theatre and Speech CommunicationDepartment are innumerable. In the early days, she had a number oflogistical obstacles to overcome. She felt thatwhat she didbestwas to generate anidea and see it through, "I'm a planner." Itwas not an easymatterwhen Professor Ettinger- one ofthe first female chairs atthe college - raninto numerous financial and political hurdleswhile attempting tobring the study and practice ofTheatreArts to Salem. When asked how she accomplished so much in the late 60's and 70's she replied,"I made ita pointofdoingfirstand askingifI could doitlater." Anditworked. Under Ettinger'sleadership, Salem State Theatre ascended into one ofit'sfastest phases ofgrowth with acquisitions ofspaces, increasingfaculty, and the establishment ofa B.A. degree in theater. EttingerbroughtSalem State Theatre to a newlevel ofregional recognitionin the 1976 production ofAMidsummerNight's Dream which was selected as a regional finalistin the KC/ACTF NationalFestival. Itisveryclearwhata drivingforce Charlottewas toboth the discipline and the Art ofTheatre atSalem State College. Although she feltthatherbest "performance" was as a wife and mother, Charlotte Ettingerwill alwaysbe remembered as Salem State College's"FirstLady" ofTheatre. 2
