This book is based in part on Leonard Feather’s Encyclopedia of Jazz, The New Encyclo-
pedia of Jazz,andThe Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Sixties and on a subsequent work by
Mr. Feather and Ira Gitler, The Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Seventies.
The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz is a thorough revision, recasting, and expan-
sion of these books.
Leonard Feather and Ira Gitler agreed with Oxford in 1990to publish this work. Both
authors had made significant progress when, in September 1994, Leonard Feather died.
Ira Gitler then assumed the responsibility of completing the work. We are aware of the
great burden this placed upon him, and we remain greatly impressed with the effort and
skill with which he has brought the work to its successful conclusion.
This2007edition of The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazzdoes not update or, for the
most part, correct information in the body of each entry. However, in the headings of
many biographies there are corrections and updates pertaining to birth places and dates,
death places and dates, and nomenclature.
