Writing
This edited volume showcases state-of-the-art research in technological
applications in second language writing. It examines multimodal composing,
digital feedback, data-driven learning, machine translation, and technological
applications in writing pedagogy.
Technology in Second Language Writing reflects the rapidly changing field
of technology in second language learning and highlights technological
advances across different areas relevant to L2 writing. Composed of empiri-
cal studies, reviews, and descriptive essays, this book covers a variety of topics
across the areas of composing, pedagogy, and writing research. It includes
discussion of computer-mediated communication, language learners’ percep-
tions about using technology in their writing, the use of social media in writ-
ing, corpus learning, translation software, and the use of electronic feedback
in language classrooms.

Vahid Abolghasemi Vahid Abolghasemi received his PhD in signal and
image processing from the University of Surrey, UK, in 2011. He is
currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Essex, UK. His main
research interests are signal and image processing, computer vision, and
machine learning.
Theresa Y. Austin She is a Professor of Language, Literacy, & Culture
at UMass Amherst. Theresa Y. Austin is a devoted anti-racist teacher-
educator/researcher committed to serving diasporic communities. She
collaborates on language planning and policy issues that advance social
justice and intercultural growth.
Maria Bondarenko Maria Bondarenko, PhD, is a Lecturer in Second
Language Pedagogy at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and a
Lecturer in Russian language at the University of Montreal (Canada). Her
research focuses on different aspects of cognitive L2 pedagogy, L2 pedagogy
for beginners, telecollaboration, and gamification in L2 classrooms.
Simon Boyton Simon Boynton is a Lecturer at the Centre for Applied
English Studies of the University of Hong Kong and previously coordinated
the English-in-the-Discipline courses for the Faculty of Medicine.
Emma R. Britton Emma R. Britton recently earned a PhD in Language,
Literacy & Culture from Umass Amherst and works in the Language
Resource Center at Cornell University. Her research draws upon critical
linguistic and sociocultural theories to examine L2 writing pedagogies.
Juan Castillo Juan Castillo is a Lecturer at the Centre for Applied English
Studies of the University of Hong Kong and teaches English-in-the-

Burcu Gokgoz-Kurt received her PhD from the University of South
Carolina in 2016. She is a Fulbright alumna who is interested in teaching
pronunciation, translation studies, and linguistics.
Hampus Holm Hampus Holm is a Doctoral Researcher in language
teaching and learning at Department of Language Studies, Umeå
University, Umeå, Sweden. He is writing his doctorate on the impact of
mobile digital literacies on the first and second language writing of upper
secondary Swedish school students.
Sima Khezrlou Sima Khezrlou received her PhD in TESOL from Urmia
University, Iran. Her research interests include instructed second language
acquisition, form-focused instruction, task-based language teaching, and
CALL.
Liudmila Klimanova Liudmila Klimanova, PhD, is an Assistant Professor
of Russian and Second Language Acquisition at the University of Arizona.
Her research focuses on topics related to telecollaboration and critical
virtual exchange, CMC, task-based learning, inclusive language teaching
pedagogies, and identity deployment in digital spaces. She is the editor of
Identity, Multilingualism, and CALL (Equinox).
Hengyi Liu Hengyi Liu is a current PhD candidate in Language, Literacy
& Culture from UMass Amherst, USA. He is interested in conducting
ethnographic research and using (multimodal) discourse analysis to
understand the use of language by multilingual students in the US context.

Sabah S. Mustafa Sabah S. Mustafa is a Professor of English and Translation
at the Department of English, College of Languages, University of
Baghdad, Baghdad, Iraq. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the
Journal of College of Languages at the University of Baghdad. He has
been teaching English at the university for over 30 years. His primary
research program focuses on language and translation studies, contrastive
linguistics, corpus linguistics, language instruction, teaching EFL, and
intercultural rhetoric.
Ruochen Ning Ruochen Ning is a PhD student in the Grael research
group, Department of Translation and Language Science of Pompeu Fabra
University, Barcelona, Spain. Her research interests include L2 motivation,
language attitudes and identity, and language learning practice and
strategies. Her current research project focuses on the Catalan-learning
practices of Chinese students in Catalonia.
Jingjing Qin Dr Jingjing Qin is an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics
at Language Studies Department, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Her research interests include L2 writing, written discourse, and second
language pedagogy.
Simon Scanlon Simon Scanlon is a Lecturer at the Centre for Applied
English Studies of the University of Hong Kong and teaches English-in-
the-Discipline courses for medical students.

Dr Shu-Chiao Tsai is a Full Professor in the Center of Liberal Arts at
