Elytt,a,Tokyo,27(2):553-571,November13,1999 StudiesontheAsianStaphylininae(Coleoptera,Staphylinidae) N RevisionalNotesontheGeneraRhyncocheilusFAuvEL andRhynchocheilusSHARP,withRedescriptions oftheirTypeSpecies Yasuhiko HAYAsHI Suimeidai3-1-73,KawanishiCity,Hyogo,666-0116Japan Abstract CharacteristicsofthegeneraRhyncoc11ellusFAuvELandRhynchocheiius SHARPare reviewed, and their typespecies,StaphylinusaurousFABRIcIusandRhyn- cl1ochelhlspectoralisSHARP,areredescribed. Rhyncocheiluswasfirstlyintroduced(published)byFAuvELin1882withoutde- scriptionasanunpublishedgenericname forStaphy11nusaurousFABRIcIUs.SHARP (1889) established thegenusRhynchocheilus for RhynchochelluspectoralisSHARP, thoughhedidnotgiveanycommentonRhyncocheilusFAUvEL.Thereafter, most re- searchersoftheStaphylinidae, evenFAuvELhimself, treatedthe formerasaninvalid nameand/orajuniorsynonymofthelatter. CAMERON(1932)maybethefirstandthe only oneresearcher whoredescribed the genusRhynchoche11us (spelled as Rhyn- cochihts) afterSHARPinhissense. 0ntheotherhan BLAcKwELDER(1952) recog- nizedRhyncoche11usFAuvELas an acceptablenameand regardedRhynchocheilus SHARPasajuniorsynonymoftheformer.Hisarrangementseemsreasonableunderthe presentnomenclature,butColFFAIT(1982)stillconsideredRhynchocheilusSHARPto beanavailablename. Recently,IhadanopportunitytocloselyexaminethetypespecimenofStaphyli- nus aurous FABRlclus with someadditional specimens and the type specimens of RhynchocheiluspectoralisSHARP.A量oracarefulexaminationofthesetypespecimens andseveraladditionalones, ithasbecomeclearthatthetwogeneraareclearlydiffer- ent.ThereforeIamgoingtoredescribethesegeneraonthebasisofclosereexamina- tionofthetypespecimens, andtodiscusstheirphylogeneticrelationships. “Rhyncocheilus”maybeamiss-spellingof“Rhynchoche11us”,butbotharecor- rect originalspellingsaccording to thepresentCodeofZoological Nomenclature. Thesenamesare, however, verysimilar toeachother, andconfusing;ithasbeenoften miss_spelledasRhyncochilusorRhynchochilus.Suchconfusionsareinevitableso far asthetwonamesareavailable. It isthereforedesirablethatanewsubstitutenamewill beproposedforRhynchocheilusundertheplenarypoweroftheCommisionofZoolog- icalNomenclature. 554 YasuhikoHAYAsH1 Beforegoinginto furtherdetails, IwishtoexpressmyheartythankstoMr.M.J.
