Since then а number of books and articles оп the subject of Catullus' poetry have appeared. None of them, however, has апу direct bearing оп the basic purpose of this book, which is to present а radically new approach to Greek and Latin quantitative metrics, as developed Ьу Professor Howard Porter of Columbia University. 1 have therefore not fe1t it necessary to make апу revision in the text, a1though 1 have enlarged the bibliography to include important recent publications. 1 would have liked to have presented ту statistical material to the Dartmouth College Computer center, since there is certainly much that сап Ье ascer tained in the field of metrics Ьу modern computer methods. The small number of lines to Ье considered, however, made the project unrealistic. Much of the material of the book was derived fomn а course given under the joint sponsorship of the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Greek and Latin at Columbia in the spring of 1967 entitled "Language and Poetry." Thus 1 ат deeply in debted to Professor J ohn Lotz for тапу of the definitions as expressed in linguistic terminology, and to Professor Robert Austerlitz for his assistance with charts. The greatest single debt 1 owe to Professor Howard Porter. His perception that the aesthetic elements of а роет, its vocabulary, perfect1y chosen turns of phrase, deep human truths, were so тапу lifeless disiecta тeтbra without the unifying vibrant immediacy of the metrical pattern chosen Ьу the poet as the medium of expression, was the prime mover for this book. Мапу other individuals have been of invaluable assistance. Chief of these are Professor Gilbert Highet, Mark Ju piter of the Columbia University library staff, and the two foreign scholars who sent те copies of their own works: Professor Ernst Zinn of the Uni versity of Tiibingen and Professor Francesco della Corte of the University of Genoa. Last1y thanks are due to Patricia Horowitz, not only for her painstaking care in the preparation of the type script, but for her never failing enthusiasm and cheerfulness in the {асе of аН the frustrations and changes such а task entails.
