ISBN 981-02-1342-5 Printed in Singapore by Stamford Press Pte Ltd v Preface As in the previous years, the 1992 Trieste Spring School included a wide range of topics of current interest related to Quantum Gravity and String Theory. Some interesting new developments had just taken place in the study of quantum black holes, where two-dimensional string inspired models had opened up a new way to penetrate into some of their secrets. A clear intro duction into the subject, as well as an overview of the recent work, was given in the lectures by J. Harvey and A. Strominger. Related topics were discussed in lectures by H. Verlinde, who discussed gravitational scattering at planckian energies, and G. Horowitz, who gave an exposition of the physical properties higher dimensional black holes and black strings in string theory. The miraculous world of N = 2 superconformal field theories was discussed in lectures by S. Cecotti, J. Distler and P. Candelas. Among the subjects covered in their lectures were, respectively, aspects related to topological field theory, properties of N = 2 sigma models, and mirror symmetry of Calabi Yau manifolds. S. Das and A. Dhar lectured about the remarkably powerful application of the matrix model techniques to the study of string theory in two dimensions, and A. Sen gave a clear overview of the current status and developments in string field theory. As traditional, the School was followed by a Workshop in which many other new developments received attention.
