II.ValuesandVision From itsfounding, StetsonUniversityhas affirmed the importanceofspiritual life and the questfortruth initseducationalmission. TheUniversitymotto, ProDeoetVeritate ("For God and Truth"), is a symbol ofthis commitment, and it expresses ourdetermination to integratethepursuitofaliberaleducationwiththesearchformeaninginourlivesandinour communities. Charteredasanindependentandcomprehensiveuniversity,Stetsonhashad an historical relationship with the Christian community and the Baptist denominations. Thatrelationshiphasshapedourcommitmenttobuildaninclusivecommunity. Today,the Universityincludespersonsfromdiversereligious,ethnic,cultural,economic,andintellectual backgrounds. Inourcurriculumandco-curricularactivities,then,weaimtoinfuseliberaleducationwith the values of religious and spiritual life, ethical decision-making, human diversity and commonality,genderequity,communityservice,andenvironmentalresponsibility. Weaspire todevelopdistinctive,innovative,andinterdisciplinaryundergraduateandgraduateprograms that are centered on vigorous intellectual inquiry, informed by these values, increasingly globalinperspective,andworthyoflocalandnationalrecognition. HI.HeritageandCharacter Florida'sfirstprivateuniversity,StetsonUniversitywasfoundedin1883byHenryA.DeLand, a New York philanthropist, as DeLand Academy. In 1887, the Legislature ofthe State of Floridaenacted the CharterofDeLand Universityas an independent institutionofhigher learning. The University's name was changed in 1889 to honor John B. Stetson, the nationallyknownhatmanufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhistimeandmeanstoadvance thequalityandreputationofthe institution,andwhoserved,withMr. DeLandandothers, asafoundingtrusteeoftheUniversity. ThefirstcharterstatedtheobjectoftheUniversity shouldhe"topromotethegeneralinterestsofeducation,andtoqualifyitsstudentstoengage inthe learnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsofsociety, andtodischargehonorablyand usefullythevariousdutiesoflife."Stetson'sfirstpresident,Dr.JohnF.Forbes,clearlydescribed the commitment to teaching that has been a hallmark of the University throughout its history: "Buildings, libraries and apparatus are good and give added—power, but thevitalcontactof students with a vigorous and stimulating mind and heart this is the sine qua nonofa successfuleducation....Themostimportantthingistofindmenandwomenoflargeheart and mind, apt to teach andfull ofenthusia—sm and stimulatingpower.... todevelop in the studentthehabitofindependentjudgment ofinvestigatingstatementsandprinciplesfor oneself,andthusforoneselfdiscovertheirtruthorfalsity." Today,StetsonUniversityisanon-sectarian,comprehensive,privateuniversitycomposedof individually strong undergraduate programs invarious colleges and schools, and a selected groupofacademicallydistinctivegraduate,professional,andcontinuingeducationprograms. Weseekacademicallytalentedindividualswithleadershippotentialandrecordsofpersonal growth and community service. V. Florida'sFirstPrivateUniversity,StetsonUniversitymeasuresitsqualityintangibleways • NotonlywasStetsonthefirstprivateuniversityestablishedinFlorida(1883),butithad thestatesfirst: -Business,law,andmusicschools; -PrivateuniversityPhiBetaKappachapter; -College-levelModelSenateprogram,aprototypeformanyothers; -Federaldocumentdepository(established 1887); -Collegenewspaper,TheStetsonReporter,foundedin1887; -Collegiatetheatricalcompany,StoverTheatre,whichisalsotheSouthsoldest; -Firstengineeringschool,althoughlaterclosed; -FirstContinuingEducationProgram. • TheStetsonUniversityCollegeofLawisthefirstandonlylawschooltowinallfive nationalmocktrialteamcompetitionsinoneacademicyear. • TheCollegeofLawwasrankedintheU.S.NewsandWorldReport"2004Best GraduateSchools"surveyafirstinthenationfortrialadvocacytraining. • ThenewStetsonUniversityCenteratCelebration,openedinSeptemberof2001, isOsceolaCounty'sfirstuniversitycampus. • StetsonranksfourthamongtheSouth'stopregionaluniversitiesinthe2004U.S. NewsandWorldReportnationalsurvey,"America'sBestColleges,"andislisted favorablyinallmajornationalcollegeguides. • Stetson'sstudent-facultyratiois 11 to 1,oneofthelowestinthenation. • Stetson'sathleticmilestonesincludethefollowing:firstFloridauniversitytoearn 1,000victoriesinitsmen'sbasketballprogram;firstintercollegiatebaseballgamevs. RollinsCollege in 1895;firstintercollegiatefootballgamevs.FloridaAgricultural College (UniversityofFlorida) in1901 (won6-0);firstintercollegiatemen's basketballgamevs.FloridaSouthernin1913 (won30-16);andfirstintercollegiate women'sbasketballgamevs.RollinsCollegein 1906 (won39-16). • TheGillespieMuseumofMinerals,recommendedinallmajortourismguides,has oneofthelargestprivatemineralcollectionsintheworldandthelargestinthe Southeast(morethan25,000specimens). • TheRolandGeorgeInvestmentsProgram, inwhichstudentsinvestarealportfolioof morethan$2.8million, isoneofthefirstandmostdistinctiveinthenation.For threeconsecutiveyears,Georgestudentshavecapturedtophonorsinthenational investmentcompetitionRISE(RedefiningInvestmentStrategyEducation). • TheduPont-BallLibrary,withmorethan300,000publicationsinstateandfederal documentholdings,hasoneofthenation'smostcomprehensivedataarchives. • Stetson'scorecampuswasdesignatedaNationalHistoricDistrictin 1991. • MorethanhalfofStetson'sstudentsareinvolvedinactivecommunityservice,and StetsonstudentshavebeenrecognizedforvolunteerleadershipbytheStateofFlorida andbyFloridaLeadermagazine. • TheRussianStudiesProgram,withitsowncenter,ranksastheSouth'smost comprehensiveandoneofthenation'sbest. • Stetson'sCommunitySchooloftheArtsChildren'sChoirisrankedasoneofthe nation'sbest,andhasbeenchosentwiceto"leadtheworld"duringthePBSWorld's LargestConcert. WhatisaHatter? Theunlikelycombinationofafamoushatmanufacturerandauniversityproducedanovel nickname for Stetson University. The athletic teams are called "Hatters," reflecting the university'sassociationwithJohnB. Stetson,makerofthewell-knownStetsonhats. Itall beganin1883whenHenryDeLandfoundedtheDeLandAcademy.Threeyearslater,after a disastrous freeze affecting the citrus industry left DeLand in financial distress, Stetson, whohadawinterhomeinDeLand,becameinterestedintheschool.AtDeLand'srequest, Stetson was made chairman ofthe Board ofTrustees in 1889 and the university was re- named inhishonor. StetsonUniversityfielded thefirstfootball team in Florida in 1901. Thename"Hatter"wasusedthenandisstillinusetoday. TheStetsonColors The official Stetsoncolors are a rich darkgreen (PMS 342) and white, representing the treesandorange blossomsprevalent intheCentralFlorida area. Whiterepresentspurity, andgreen,significantgrowth.Atthefirstcommencementin 1893,thestagewasdecorated in green and white. These colors also were used first at the beginning ofintercollegiate athletics inFlorida.NewspaperaccountsofthefirstFloridacollegefootballgame in 1901 toldofStetsonfanswavingtheircolorsofgreenandwhite as theycheered theirteamto victory. TheVictoryBellatHollisCenter AVictory Bell, made inAarau, Switzerland,bringsnewvitalityand traditions tostudent lifeatStetsonUniversity. Hanginginafreestanding43.5-footbelltoweronthewestside ofHollisCenter,thebronze,C-tonedVictoryBellweighs575pounds,measures30inches in diameter at its base, and is 29.5 inches high. It is inscribed with the quotation: "VICTORY COMES FROM DOING—YOUR BEST." Student groups ring the bell to announcevictoriesimportanttothem bothinathleticandintellectualcompetitions.
