Stetson'sstudent-facultyratiois 12 to 1,oneofthelowestinthenation. TheGillespieMuseumofMinerals,recommendedinallmajortourismguides,hasoneofthelargestprivate mineralcollectionsintheworldandthelargestintheSoutheast(morethan25,000specimens). TheRolandGeorgeInvestmentsProgram,inwhichstudentsinvestarealportfoUoofmorethan$1.8million,isone ofthefirstandmostdistinctiveinthenation. TheHolUsLeadershipDevelopmentProgramistheonlybroad-basedprograminFloridatoteachleadershipskills. TheduPont-BallLibrary,withmorethan300,000publicationsinstateandfederaldocumentholdings. ThankstoendowmentfundsfromtheKresgeFoundation,Stetsonundergraduatestudentsworkwithstate-of-the- artscientificequipment. Stetson'scorecampuswasdesignatedaNationalHistoricDistrictin 1991,recognizingtheleadingrolethe universityhasplayedinthedevelopmentofeducationalopportunitiesinFlorida. The Stetson Children's Choiris ranked as oneof thenation's best, andhasbeenchosentwiceto "lead theworld" duringthePBSWorld'sLargestConcert. ElementsofStetson's Image Program Florida's First Private University TheWordmarkandtheTagline Theofficialwordmark, thehand-drawngraphicthat isanintegralpartoftheUniversity'simageandaregistered, primaryidentifier,representsqualitiesofacademicdistinctionandstrength.Itsayswhatweareinthemost graphically,economicalwaypossible.Thewordmarkservesanotheressentialpurpose:itsignifiestheimportanceof thewordUNIVERSITY.This.conceptisreinforcedbyusingtheofficialuniversitytagline: "Florida'sFirstPrivate University."Thetaglinewasdevelopedtobolsterimportantmarketingconceptsandtogivetheuniversityasense ofplace. TheStetsonEmblem Theofficialemblemof StetsonUniversitywasadoptedbetween1889and 1891, aboutthetimethenameofthe institutionwaschangedfromDeLandAcademytoJohnB. StetsonUniversity. Itfirstappearedonauniversity cataloguein 1891.Thedrawingwasbyanartist-in-residenceandjointlyapprovedbyPresidentForbes,Henry DeLandandJohnB.Stetson,aswellastheBoardofTrustees.TheLatinmotto"ProDeoEtVeritate"istranslated "ForGodAndTruth."TheLamp, signifyingtheLightofTruth,restsontheBookofWisdom.Whentheuniversity's namewasofficiallyshortenedto"StetsonUniversity", duringacharterrevisionin1993,theemblemwasrevised slightlytoreflectthatchange.TheemblemisusedonofficialimiversitypubUcationssuchasdiplomasand resolutions.Becauseitincludesthemotto,itisnotusedonmerchandiseormemorabilia. ^I£m^ TheStetson UniversityLogos AsecondarysymboloftheDeLandcampus, ourlogo, displaysthebeloved Stetsonsymbol,theElizabethHallCupola,andproclaimsournameand foundingdate.Usedwiththewordmark,itisprintedonmanypublicationsand othermemorabilia. TheCollegeofLawhasadoptedasilhouetteoftheTowerontheSt. Petersburg campus,alsousedwiththewordmarkandthewords:CollegeofLaw. DeLandCampuslogo StetsoninType TheofficialuniversitytypefaceisGoudyOldstyle,aseriftypeface.Itwaschosenbecauseitisclosesttothestyleof ourwordmark.Othertypefacesmaybeappropriate.Themostimportantthingtorememberabouttypeisthatit needstobeveryreadable.Readabilityisaffectedbymanyfactors,including: thestyleandappearanceofthe typeface, thesize, thelinelength, theamountofspacebetweenlinesofte.\t,thedepthofcontrastbetweenthe paperandtheinkused, andthelinejustification. TheStetsonColors TheofficialStetsoncolorsarearichdarkgreen(PMS 342)andwhite,representingtheorangetreesandorange blossomsprevalentIntheCentralFloridaarea.Whiterepresentspurity,andgreen,significantgrowth. Atthefirstcommencementin1893, thestagewasdecoratedingreenandwhite.Thesetwocolorswerealsofirst usedatthebeginningofintercollegiateathleticsinFlorida.NewspaperaccountsofthefirstFloridacollegefootball gamein1901 toldofStetsonfanswavingtheircolorsofgreenandwhiteastheycheeredtheirteamtovictory. Anothercolorusedformarketingpurposesisarichburgundy(PMS 202).Thiscolorisusedinsomeadmissions publications, andisthecoloroftheunderlineinthegraphicrepresentationofthetagline,"Florida'sFirstPrivate University." TheVictoryBellatHoUisCenter AVictoryBell,madeinAarau,Switzerland,bringsnewvitalityandtraditionstostudentlifeatStetsonUniversity. Hanginginafree-standing43.5-footbelltowerinthewestsideofHollisCenter,thebronze, C-tonedVictoryBell weighs 575pounds,measures30inchesindiameteratitsbase, andis29.5 incheshigh.Itisinscribedwiththe quotation: "VICTORYCOMESFROMDOINGYOURBEST". StudentgroupsringthebeUtoannouncevictories importanttothem—bothinathleticandintellectualcompetitions. WhatisaHatter? Theunlikelycombinationofafamoushatmanufacturerandauniversitygettingtogetherproducedanovelnickname forStetsonUniversity. Theathleticteamsarecalled"Hatters",reflectingtheUniversity'sassociationwithJohnB. Stetson,makerofthewell-knownStetsonhats. Itallstartedbackin 1883whenHenryDeLandfoimdedtheDeLand .•\cademy. Threeyearslater,afteradisastrousfreezeaffectingthecitrus industryleftMr.DeLandinfinancialtrouble, Mr.Stetson,whohadawinterhomeinDeLand,becameinterested intheschool. When,atMr.DeLand'srequest,Mr. StetsonwasmadechairmanoftheBoardofTrusteesin 1889,theschool wasre-namedinhis honor. Stetson UniversityfieldedthefirstfootballteaminFloridain1901,andthenickname"Hatter"wasusedthenandisstillused today. TheMascot Afterafiveyearabsence,anew,modernizedStetsonHattermascotmadeits inaugural appearanceNovember30, 1995attheArmualAll-SportPepRallyheldintheEdmundsCenter. Themascot,whichpossessesabigsmile,wearsa bighatandisoutfittedwithasuitjacket,bowtieanda Stetsonjersey,wasunveiledbythe"S"Club,Student-Athlete AdvisoryCommitteeduringtheenthusiasticcampus-wideeventtopromoteschoolspirit. StetsontooktheoriginalartvvorkfromLewisCarrol'screationoftheHatterandupdateditintothenewmascot. Afull assortmentoftryoutswereconductedtoselectateamwhichcouldtaketurnsperformingatnumerousfunctionsas theStetsonHattermascot. Priortotheimveilingin1995,amascotwasneededintheearly 1970sinorderforthebasketballprogramtoenter NCAADivisionI. AsaresultoftheeffortsmadebychemistrystudentPeteGibbonsandMrs.AnitaLindstrom,alarge hatcostvmiewascreatedforuseuptothelate 1980sandearly 1990s. ALMA MATER DearAlmaMater, smileuponthychildren!
