Muchofcollege lifeis built around traditions—thehistoryofyesterday linked totoday.University traditions help
developa senseofloyalty through theyears. Whenyou return tocampusasalumni, somethingswill haveremained
the same. StetsonUniversity is rich in history, and nowit will hea part ofyourhistory, too.Joinin—becomeapartof

StetsonUniversitymeasuresitsqualityintangibleways
• Not onlywas Stetson the first privateuniversityestablishedinFlorida(1883), and thefirst privateuniversityto
integrate(in I960),but it hadthestate'sfirst:
1 Business,law,andmusicschools;
2, Private universityPhiBetaKappachapter;
3. College-level Model Senate program,aprototypeformanyothers;
4 Federaldocument depository(established 1887);
5.Collegenewspaper, TheStetsonReporter, foundedin 1887;
6.Collegiatetheatricalcompany(StoverTheatreisalsotheSouth'soldest).
• Stetson'sathleticmilestonesincludethefollowing: firstFloridauniversitytoearn 1,000victoriesinitsmen's
basketballprogram; firstintercollegiatebaseballgamevs. RollinsCollegein 1895; first intercollegiatefootballgame
vs.FloridaAgriculturalCollege(UniversityofFlorida)in 1901 (won6-0);firstintercollegiatemen'sbasketballgame
vs. FloridaSouthernin 1913(won30-16); andfirstintercollegiatewomen'sbasketballgamevs.RollinsCollegein
1906(won39-16).
StetsonisrankedamongtheSouth'stopfourregionaluniversitiesinthe 1999 U.S.NewsandWorldReportnational
survey, ".America'sBestColleges," andislistedfavorablyinallmajornationalcollegeguides.
In 1998theCollegeofLaw'strialadvocacyprogramwasrecognizedasthebestinthenationforthefourth
consecutiveyear.StetsonledallFloridalawschoolsinthepercentageofgraduateswhopassedthesummer 1998
FloridaBarexamination.
Stetson'sstudent-facultyratiois 12 to 1,oneofthelowestinthenation.
TheGillespieMuseumofMinerals, recommendedinallmajortourismguides, hasoneofthelargestprivate
mineralcollectionsintheworldandthelargestintheSoutheast(morethan25,000specimens).
TheRolandGeorgeInvestmentsProgram,inwhichstudentsinvestarealportfolioofmorethan$1.8million,isone
ofthefirstandmostdistinctiveinthenation.
TheHollisLeadershipDevelopmentProgramistheonlybroad-basedprograminFloridatoteachleadershipskills.
TheduPont-BallLibrary,withmorethan300,000publicationsinstateandfederaldocumentholdings.
ThankstoendowmentfundsfromtheKresgeFoundation,Stetsonundergraduatestudentsworkwithstate-of-the-
artscientificequipment.
Stetson'scorecampuswasdesignatedaNationalHistoricDistrictin1991,recognizingtheleadingrolethe
universityhasplayedinthedevelopmentofeducationalopportunitiesinFlorida.
MorethanhalfofStetson'sstudentsareinvolvedinactivecommunityservice,andStetsonstudentshavebeen
recognizedforvolunteerleadershipbytheStateofFloridaandbyFloridaLeadermagazine.
TheRussianStudiesProgram,withitsowncenter,ranksasthesouth'smostcomprehensiveandoneofthe
nation'sbest.
AccreditingagencieshaverecognizedthequalityofStetsonanditsschoolsanddepartments:TheCommissionon
CollegesofTheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchools,theAmericanBarAssociation,theAmerican
ChemistrySociety, theNationalAssociationofSchoolsofMusic,theAmericanAssemblyofCollegiateSchoolsof
Business,andtheNationalCouncilforAccreditationofTeacherEducation.
The Stetson Children's Choiris rankedas oneofthenation'sbest, andhasbeenchosentwice to "lead theworld"
duringthePBSWorld'sLargestConcert.
TheStetsonEmblem
Theofficialemblemof StetsonUniversitywasadoptedbetween1889and 1891,aboutthetimethenameofthe
institutionwaschangedfromDeLandAcademytoJohnB.StetsonUniversity.Itfirstappearedonauniversitycatalogue
in 1891.Thedrawingwasbyanartist-in-residenceandjointlyapprovedbyPresidentForbes,HenryDeLandandJohnB.
Stetson, aswellastheBoardofTrustees.TheLatinmotto"ProDeoEtVeritate"istranslated"ForGodAndTruth."The
Lamp, signifyingtheLightofTruth,restsontheBookofWisdom.Whentheuniversity'snamewasofficiallyshortened
to"StetsonUniversity",duringacharterrevisionin 1993,theemblemwasrevisedslightlytoreflectthatchange.The
emblemisusedonofficialuniversitypublicationssuchasdiplomasandresolutions.Becauseitincludesthemotto,itis
notusedonmerchandiseormemorabilia.
TheStetsonUniversityLogos
DeLandCampuslogo
AsecondarysymboloftheDeLandcampus, ourlogo,displaysthebelovedStetsonsymbol,theElizabethHallCupola,
andproclaimsournameandfoundingdate.Usedwiththewordmark,itisprintedonmanypublicationsandother
memorabilia.
TheCollegeofLawhasadoptedasilhouetteoftheTowerontheSt.Petersburgcampus, alsousedwiththe
wordmarkandthewords: CollegeofLaw.
TheVictoryBellatHollisCenter
AVictoryBell,madeinAarau, Switzerland,bringsnewvitalityandtraditionstostudentlifeatStetsonUniversity.
Hanginginafree-standing43.5-footbelltowerinthewestsideofHollisCenter,thebronze,C-tonedVictoryBell
weighs 575pounds,measures30inchesindiameteratitsbase,andis29.5 incheshigh. Itisinscribedwiththe
quotation: "VICTORYCOMESFROMDOING YOURBEST."Studentgroupsringthebelltoannouncevictoriesimportant
tothem—bothinathleticandintellectualcompetitions.
Some ElementsofStetson's Image Program
Florida'sFirstPrivateUniversity
TheWordmarkandtheTagline
Theofficialwordmark,thehand-drawngraphicthat isanintegralpartoftheUniversity'simageandaregistered,
primaryidentifier,representsqualitiesofacademicdistinctionandstrength.Itsayswhatweareinthemost
graphically, economicalwaypossible.Thewordmarkservesanotheressentialpurpose:itsignifiestheimportanceof
thewordUNIVERSITY.Thisconceptisreinforcedbyusingtheofficialuniversitytagline: "Florida'sFirstPrivate
University."Thetaglinewasdevelopedtobolsterimportantmarketingconceptsandtogivetheuniversityasenseof
place.
StetsoninType
TheofficialuniversitytypefaceisGoudyOldstyle,aseriftypeface.Itwaschosenbecauseitisclosesttothestyleof
ourwordmark. Othertypefacesmaybeappropriate.Themostimportantthingtorememberabouttypeisthatit
needstobeveryreadable.Readabilityisaffectedbymanyfactors,including:thestyleandappearanceofthetypeface,
thesize,thelinelength,theamountofspacebetweenlinesoftext,thedepthofcontractbetweenthepaperandthe
inkused, andthelinejustification.
TheStetsonColors
TheofficialStetsoncolorsarearichdarkgreen(PMS342)andwhite,representingtheorangetreesandorange
blossomsprevalentintheCentralFloridaarea.Whiterepresentspurity,andgreen,significantgrowth.
Atthefirstcommencementin1893,thestagewasdecoratedingreenandwhite.Thesetwocolorswerealso
firstusedatthebeginningofintercollegiateathleticsinFlorida. NewspaperaccountsofthefirstFloridacollege
footballgamein 1901 toldofStetsonfanswavingtheircolorsofgreenandwhiteastheycheeredtheirteamto
victory.
Anothercolorusedformarketingpurposesisarichburgundy(PMS202).Thiscolorisusedinsome
admissionspublications,andisthecoloroftheunderlineinthegraphicrepresentationofthetagline, "Florida'sFirst
PrivateUniversity."
What isa Hatter?
Theunlikelycombinationofafamoushat manufacturerandauniversitygettingtogetherproducedanovelnickname
tin Stetson l'niversity. Theathletic teams arecalled "Hatters", reflecting theI(Diversity'sassociationwithJohnB.
Stetson, makerofthewell-knownStetsonhats. Itailstartedbackin 1883whenHenryDeLand founded the DeLand
Academy. Threeyearslater,afteradisastrousfreezeaffectingthecitrus industryleftMr.DeLandinfinancialtrouble,
Mr. Stetson,whohadawinterhomeinDeLand,becameinterested intheschool. When,at Mr. DeLand'srequest, Mr
Stetsonwas madechairmanofthe BoardofTrusteesin 1889, theschool wasre-named inhis honor. Stetson
I imersity fieldedthefirstfootballteaminFloridain 1901,andthenickname"Hatter"wasusedthenandisstillused
today.
The Mascot
Aftera fiveyearabsence,anew,modernizedStetsonHattermascotmadeits inaugural appearanceNovember30,
1995attheAnnualAll-SportPepRallyheldintheEdmundsCenter. Themascot,whichpossessesabigsmile,wearsa
bighatandisoutfittedwithasuitjacket,bowtieanda Stetsonjersey,wasunveiledbythe"S"Club,Student-Athlete
AdvisoryCommitteeduringtheenthusiasticcampus-wideeventtopromoteschoolspirit.
StetsontooktheoriginalartworkfromLewisCarrol'screationoftheHatterandupdateditintothenewmascot. Afull
assortment oftryoutswereconductedtoselectateamwhichcould taketurnsperformingatnumerousfunctionsas
theStetsonHattermascot.
Priortotheunveilingin 1995, amascotwasneededintheearly 1970sinorderforthebasketballprogramtoenter
NCAADivisionI. AsaresultoftheeffortsmadebychemistrystudentPeteGibbonsandMrs.AnitaLindstrom,alarge
hatcostumewascreatedforuseuptothelate 1980sandearly 1990s.

Stetson University provides distinctive programs which include a comprehensive university curriculum
