Heritage Stetson University, Florida's first private university, was founded in 1883 by Henry A. DeLand, a New York philanthropist, as DeLand Academy. In 1887, the Legislature ofthe State ofFlorida enacted the Charter ofDeLand University as an independent and autonomous institution ofhigher learning. The university name was changed in 1889 tohonorJohnB. Stetson, the nationallyknownhat manufacturerwhogave generouslyofhis time and meansto advance the quality and reputation ofthe institution, and who served, with Mr. DeLand and others, as a founding trustee ofthe university. Stetson's first president, Dr. John F. Forbes, clearly described the commitment to teaching, which has been a hallmark ofthe university throughout itshistory: "Buildings, librariesandapparatusaregoodandgiveaddedpower, butthevitalcontactofstudentswithavigorous and stimulating mind and heart - this is the sine quanon ofa successful education... The most important thing is to find men and women oflarge heart and mind, apt to teach and fullofenthusiasm and stimulating power...todevelop in the student the habitofindependentjudgment - ofinvestigatingstatementsand principlesforoneself, and thusfor oneselftodiscovertheirtruthorfalsity." Today, Stetson University is a non-sectarian, comprehensive, private university composed ofindividually strong undergraduate programs in various colleges and schools, and a selected group of academically distinctive graduate, professional, andcontinuingeducationprograms. AtthefirstCommencement in 1893, the stage wasdecorated in green and white. It is believed that the colorswere chosen from the rich green ol theorange treesandthepurewhiteoftheorange blossoms, a magnificent sight inthespringthroughoutFlorida'sgreat citrusbelt. The color white representspurity, and green signifiesgrowth. Page 7 Academic Attire Stetson University The traditional pageantry of an academic procession, such as the one that opens today's Commencement exercises, isoneofthe impressivespectaclesofourtime. The arrayofhandsomegownsandvividlycoloredhoodsworn by the faculty and otherofficers ofthe university are the symbols ofscholarly attainment. The earliest illustrations ofgowns worn at Oxford University in England somewhat resemble cassocks worn by English teachers who found good use for the hood, or cowl, as protection against weather. The American system of academic heraldry indicates the level ofthe degree, the field ofstudy in which it was earned, and the institution by which it wasgranted. TheAmericanmortarboard, derivedfromthesoftOxfordcap, isblack. Itstassel, forholdersofthebachelor'sand master's degrees, is usually black, although gold tassels may be worn by holders of doctoral degrees and heads of institutions. The tassel is wornon the right side ofthe capby undergraduates, on the leftbyholders ofbachelor'sand higherdegrees. It is the hood that provides academic regalia its color and offers the most information about its wearer. The silk lining ofthe hood bears the color, or colors, ofthe degree-granting college or university; its velvet facing reveals the colorassignedtoeachareaofstudy.Thedoctor'sgownmaybearvelvettrimmingonthefrontandsleeves-suchasdark blue for Doctors ofPhilosophy. A few institutions, mostly overseas but some in this country, authorize the wearingof colored robes, departingfrom the traditional black and brightlydisplaying the officialcolorsofthe university. Gonfalons Gonfalons are thought to have originated in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, when such banners displayed thepersonalcoatofarmsorensignofanoblemanand wereusedaswarflagshungfrom ahorizontalbarand carried on a staffor suspended from a knight's lance. As early as the 12th century, they were commonly used at state and religious ceremonies, and such pageantry finds a place today in the academic ceremonies ofmany colleges and universities.
