Stetson University isasmall, independentuniversityin theheartofCentral Florida. Foundedin 1883as

II.ValuesandVision
From itsfounding, StetsonUniversityhasaffirmedtheimportanceofspiritual lifeandthe

andTruth"), isasymbolofthiscommitment,anditexpressesourdeterminationtointegratethe
pursuitofaliberaleducationwith thesearchformeaninginourlivesandinourcommunities.
Charteredasanindependentandcomprehensiveuniversity, Stetsonhashadanhistorical
relationshipwith theChristiancommunityandtheBaptistdenominations.Thatrelationship

III. HeritageandCharacter
Florida'sfirstprivate university,Stetson Universitywasfounded in 1883 by HenryA.
DeLand, aNewYorkphilanthropist, as DeLandAcademy. In 1887, theLegislatureoftheState
ofFloridaenactedtheCharterofDeLand Universityasan independent institution ofhigher
learning.The University's namewaschanged in 1889 to honorJohn B. Stetson, the
nationally-known hatmanufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhis timeand meanstoadvancethe
qualityand reputationofthe institution, andwhoserved,with Mr. DeLandandothers, asa
foundingtrusteeoftheUniversity.ThefirstcharterstatedtheobjectoftheUniversityshould be
"topromotethegeneral interestsofeducation,andtoqualifyitsstudents toengage in the
learnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsofsociety, and todischargehonorablyand usefullythe
variousdutiesoflife." Stetson's firstpresident, Dr.John F. Forbes, clearlydescribed the
commitmenttoteachingthathasbeenahallmarkofthe Universitythroughout itshistory:
"Buildings, librariesandapparatusaregoodandgiveadde—dpower, butthevitalcontactof
studentswithavigorousandstimulatingmindandheart this isthesinequanonofa
successfuleducation . . .The most importantthingis to find men andwomenoflargeheart
and mind, apttoteach and fullofenthusias—m andstimulatingpower... todevelop in the
studentthehabitofindependentjudgment ofinvestigatingstatementsandprinciplesfor
oneself,and thus foroneselfdiscovertheirtruthorfalsity."
Today, Stetson Universityisanon-sectarian,comprehensive, privateuniversitycomposedof
individuallystrongundergraduateprograms invariouscollegesandschools, andaselectedgroup

FIRST-YEARSTUDENTS
ApplicationsforStetson Universityshouldbesubmittedearlyinthefirstsemesterofthehigh
schoolsenioryear.ThepriorityfilingdateforapplicationsforthefallsemesterisMarch 15; for
thespringsemesterisJanuary 1; forthesummersessionisMay 1.Applicationsreceivedafter
thosedateswillbeconsideredonaspace-availablebasis.

First-YearAdmissions Requirements
Admission totheUniversityiscompetitive. Stetsonseeksstudentswiththepotentialto
contributetoandbenefitfrom theUniversity'sdiverserangeofacademicandco-curricular
programs.Admissionsdecisionsarebaseduponthefollowing:
1 Academicrecord, includingcourseselectionandgradepointaverage
2. Standardizedtesting
3.Applicant'swritingsample
4. Demonstratedleadershippotential,co-curricularandservice-relatedactivities,andthe
abilitytocontributetotheUniversitycommunityinsomespecialway
TheAcademicRecord
Tobeconsideredforadmission, applicantsmustsatisfactorilycompleteacollegepreparatory
program inhighschool. Becausehighschoolprogramsandgradingsystemsvarywidely,the
secondaryschoolprogramcannotberigidlyprescribed. Underspecialcircumstances,some
studentsmaybeadmittedtotheGeneralStudiesProgrambytheUniversityAdmissions
Committee. StudentssoadmittedmustsuccessfullycompletetherequirementsoftheGeneral
StudiesProgram todeclareamajorinacollegeorschool. However, theAdmissionsCommittee
is mostinterested in thestudentwithsolidacademicachievementinfiveormorecollege

AdmissionsNotification EarlyDecision
An EarlyDecisionoption isavailabletowell qualifiedpotential first-yearstudentswho
designateStetsonastheirfirstchoice.ThedeadlineforreceiptofapplicationsforEarly Decision
forthefallsemesterisNovember 1.TheEarlyDecision PlanofStetson Universityis intendedto
servethosestudentswith stronghigh,school records, rankinclass,gradepointaverage, SATor
ACTscores, andspecial potential tocontributetoandbenefitfrom Stetson University.
TheEarlyDecision applicant mustsign acontract indicating(1) hisorherintention toapply
asan EarlyDecision candidate, (2) thatStetson istheinstitutionoffirstchoice,and (3) thatif
accepted, heorshewill bepreparedtopaytheenrollmentdepositandwill enrollatStetson
University.Thisstatementisacontractbetween theapplicantand the University, certifyingthat
upon admission toStetson, applicationstootherschoolswill bewithdrawnandthestudentwill
attendStetson. Parentsandsecondaryschool counselorssign thiscontractaswell.
EarlyDecisioncandidateswill benotifiedbeforeNovember25. Studentsofferedearly
admission areexpectedtocommitto the Universitywithin threeweeksofthenoticeof
admission bypaymentofanon-refundabledeposit. StudentscompletingaFinancialAid Early
EstimatorWorksheetwill receivealetterestimatingalleligiblefinancialassistance. Early
Decisioneliminatesapprehension aboutcollegeacceptance. Likewise, thestudenthasahousing
preferenceand isgiven preferential treatment throughout theadmission process.
EarlyEntry
Occasionally, high school underclassmen are interested in attendingStetson as full time
studentspriorto theirhigh school graduation. Suchstudents maybeconsidered foradmission if
theirsecondaryschoolwork isexemplary; standardized testsshowgreatacademicpotential; and
an interviewwith the DeanofAdmissions indicates that thestudent is matureandableto
handletheacademicaswell associal challengesofcollege. Such studentsmustsubmit thesame
materials requiredofall first-yearstudentapplications. NOTE: It is important for EarlyEntry
candidates tobeawarethatstudentswhoentercollegewithouta highschool diplomaorGED
areineligibleforallstateand federal financialassistance.
EnrollmentDeposit
Acceptedstudentswhoplan toattend Stetson are required to makeanenrollmentdepositto
indicatean intention toenroll.Thenon-refundabledeposit is$400 forthestudentwhowill
liveoncampusand$200 forthestudentwhowillcommute to theStetson campus. Freshmen.
sophomores, and juniors (asdetermined bycreditsearned) are required toliveon campus unless
theyplan to livewith their immediatefamilies in the DeLandarea,ormeetothercriteriaolthe

AstudentwhowishestotransfertoStetsonUniversitymust
1 Havecompletedasemesterofacademicworkataregionallyaccreditedcollegeor
universityatthetimeofentry,andnotbeconcurrentlyenrolledinhighschool
2. Beingoodstandingandeligibletocontinueorbereadmittedatthelastinstitution
attended, unlessallworkhasbeencompletedorthestudenthasgraduatedfromthat
institution
3. HaveearnedatleastaCcumulativegradepointaverage(2.0ona4.0scale) inacollege
parallel program. Mostsuccessfultransfercandidateshaveearnedatleasta3.0grade-point
average.
4. Meetallcriteriaforfirst-yearadmission iflessthan30college-levelcreditshavebeen
earned
Stetson Universityhonorssuspensionsofthelastinstitution,andcreditwillnotbeawarded
forworktakenduringthesuspension period.
