III. HeritageandCharacter Florida'sfirstprivate university,Stetson Universitywasfounded in 1883 by HenryA. DeLand, aNewYorkphilanthropist, as DeLandAcademy. In 1887, theLegislatureoftheState ofFloridaenactedtheCharterofDeLand Universityasan independent institution ofhigher learning.The University's namewaschanged in 1889 to honorJohn B. Stetson, the nationally-known hatmanufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhis timeand meanstoadvancethe qualityand reputationofthe institution, andwhoserved,with Mr. DeLandandothers, asa foundingtrusteeoftheUniversity.ThefirstcharterstatedtheobjectoftheUniversityshould be "topromotethegeneral interestsofeducation,andtoqualifyitsstudents toengage in the learnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsofsociety, and todischargehonorablyand usefullythe variousdutiesoflife." Stetson's firstpresident, Dr.John F. StudentscompletingaFinancialAid Early EstimatorWorksheetwill receivealetterestimatingalleligiblefinancialassistance. Early Decisioneliminatesapprehension aboutcollegeacceptance. Likewise, thestudenthasahousing preferenceand isgiven preferential treatment throughout theadmission process. EarlyEntry Occasionally, high school underclassmen are interested in attendingStetson as full time studentspriorto theirhigh school graduation. Suchstudents maybeconsidered foradmission if theirsecondaryschoolwork isexemplary; standardized testsshowgreatacademicpotential; and an interviewwith the DeanofAdmissions indicates that thestudent is matureandableto handletheacademicaswell associal challengesofcollege. Such studentsmustsubmit thesame materials requiredofall first-yearstudentapplications. NOTE: It is important for EarlyEntry candidates tobeawarethatstudentswhoentercollegewithouta highschool diplomaorGED areineligibleforallstateand federal financialassistance. EnrollmentDeposit Acceptedstudentswhoplan toattend Stetson are required to makeanenrollmentdepositto indicatean intention toenroll.Thenon-refundabledeposit is$400 forthestudentwhowill liveoncampusand$200 forthestudentwhowillcommute to theStetson campus. Freshmen. sophomores, and juniors (asdetermined bycreditsearned) are required toliveon campus unless theyplan to livewith their immediatefamilies in the DeLandarea,ormeetothercriteriaolthe . exemptionpolicy.Thesecriteriaare listedon theIntenttoEnrollformwhich thestudent receivesuponadmission tothe University.
