II.Values andVision
Fromitsfounding, Stetson Universityhasaffirmedtheimportanceofspirituallifeand the
questfortruth initseducational mission.TheUniversitymotto, ProDeoetVeritate("ForGod
andTruth"), isasymbolofthiscommitment, anditexpressesourdeterminationtointegrate
thepursuitofaliberaleducationwith thesearchformeaninginourlivesandinourcommuni-
ties. Charteredasanindependentandcomprehensiveuniversity, Stetsonhashadanhistorical
relationshipwith theChristiancommunityandtheBaptistdenominations.Thatrelationship
hasshapedourcommitmenttobuildan inclusivecommunity.Today, theUniversityincludes

III. Heritage and Character
Florida'sfirst private university, Stetson University'was founded in 1883 by HenryA.
DeLand, aNewYork philanthropist, as DeLand Academy. In 1887, the LegislatureoftheState
ofFloridaenacted theCharterofDeLand Universityasan independent institution ofhigher
learning.The University's namewaschanged in 1889 tohonorJohn B. Stetson, the nationally-
known hatmanufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhis timeand means toadvance thequality
and reputation ofthe institution, and whoserved,with Mr. DeLand and others, asa founding
trusteeofthe University.The firstcharterstated theobjectofthe Universityshould be "to
promote thegeneral interestsofeducation, and toqualify'itsstudents toengage in the learned
professionsorotheremploymentsofsociety, and todischargehonorablyand usefullythevari-
ousdutiesoflife." Stetson's firstpresident. Dr.John F. Forbes, clearlydescribed thecommit-
mentto teachingthat has been a hallmark ofthe Universitythroughout itshistory:
"Buildings, librariesand apparatusaregoodandgiveadded p—ower, but thevital contact
ofstudentswith avigorousandstimulatingmind and heart this is thesinequanon
ofasuccessfuleducation . . .The most important thingis to find men andwomen of
large heartand mind, apt to teach and full ofenthusiasm a—nd stimulatingpower... to
develop in thestudent thehabitofindependent judgment ofinvestigatingstatements
and principles foroneself, and thus foroneselfdiscovertheirtruth orfalsity."
Today, Stetson Universityisa non-sectarian, comprehensive, private universitycomposedof
individuallystrongundergraduateprograms in variouscollegesand schools, andaselected
groupofacademicallydistinctivegraduate, professional, andcontinuingeducation programs.

FIRST-YEARSTUDENTS
ApplicationsforStetson Universityshouldbesubmittedearlyin thefirstsemesterofthe
high school senioryear.Thepriorityfilingdateforapplicationsforthefall semesterisMarch
15; forthespringsemesteris December 15; forthesummersession is May 1.Applications
receivedafterthosedateswill beconsideredon aspace-availablebasis.

First-YearAdmissions Requirements
Admission to the Universityiscompetitive. Stetsonseeksstudentswith thepotential to
contributetoandbenefit from theUniversity'sdiverse rangeofacademicandco-curricular
programs. Admissionsdecisionsarebased upon thefollowing:
1 Academicrecord, includingcourseselection, andgradepointaverage
2. Applicant'spersonalstatement/gradedpaper
3. Demonstrated leadershippotential, co-curricularandservice-relatedactivities, andthe
abilitytocontributeto theUniversitycommunityinsomespecialway
4. Standardized testing
TheAcademicRecord
To beconsideredforadmission, applicants mustsatisfactorilycompleteacollegeprepara-
toryprogram in highschool. Ashighschoolprogramsandgradingsystemsvarywidely, the
secondaryschoolprogram cannotberigidlyprescribed. Underspecialcircumstances,some
students maybeadmittedtotheGeneralStudies ProgrambytheUniversityAdmissions
Committee. Studentssoadmitted mustsuccessfullycompletethe requirementsoftheGeneral
Studies Program todeclareamajorin aCollegeorSchool. However, theAdmissions
Committeeis mostinterestedinstudentswith solidacademicachievementin fiveormore
collegepreparatorycourseseach ofthefouryearsofhighschool. Minimumpreparationmust
includethefollowing:
1. FouryearsofEnglish
2.Atleast threeyearsofmath, includingAlgebra I, Geometry, andAlgebraII
3.Threeyearsofnaturalscience
4.Twoyearsofsocial science
5.Twoconsecutiveyearsofamodernlanguage

Suitablecollege preparatoryelectiveswill complete theapplicant's program. Agradepoint
averageofbetterthan 3.0 is typical forstudentsaccepted to Stetson. International students
should notespecificsteps for theapplication listed laterin thissection.

Admissions Notification Regular Decision Plan
Regular Decision candidates for fall admissionwill receive notification after December 1
Theadmission ofall candidates remains provisional until final grades havebeen submitted. If
final gradesare unsatisfactory, Stetson Universityreserves the right towithdrawtheofferof
admission to thestudent.

Admissions Notification EarlyDecision
An EarlyDecision option isavailable towellqualified potential first-yearstudentswho
designateStetson as their firstchoice.Thedeadlineforreceiptofapplications for Early
Decision forthe failsemesteris November 1.TheEarlyDecision Plan ofStetson Universityis
intended toserve thosestudentswith strong highschool records, rank in class,gradepoint
average, SATorACTscores, andspecial potential tocontribute toand benefit from Stetson
University.
The EarlyDecision applicant mustsign acontract indicating (1) hisorherintention to
applyasan EarlyDecision candidate, (2) thatStetson is the institutionoffirstchoice, and (3)
that ifaccepted, heorshewill beprepared to paytheenrollment depositandwill enroll at
Stetson University.Thisstatement isacontractbetween theapplicantand the University, certi-
fyingthat upon admission to Stetson, applicationstootherschoolswill bewithdrawn and the
studentwill attend Stetson. Parentsandsecondaryschoolcounselorssign thiscontractaswell.
Early Decisioncandidateswill benotified beforeNovember25. Studentsofferedearly
admission areexpected tocommit to the Universitywithin threeweeksofthenoticeofadmis-
sion bypaymentofanon-refundabledeposit. Studentscompletinga Financial EarlyEstimator
will receivean Early Decision Financial AidAward. EarlyDecisioneliminates apprehension
aboutcollegeacceptance. Likewise, thestudenthashousingpreferenceand isgiven preferential
treatment throughout theadmission process.
EarlyEntry
Occasionally, high school underclassmen are interested in attendingStetson as full time
students priorto theirhigh schoolgraduation. Such students maybeconsidered foradmission
iftheirsecondaryschool work isexemplary;standardized testsshowgreatacademic potential;
and an interviewwith the Dean ofAdmissions indicates that thestudent is matureandableto
handle theacademicaswell associal challengesofcollege. Such students must submit thesame
materials requiredofall first-yearstudentapplications. NOTE: It is important forEarly Entry
candidates to beaware thatstudentswhoentercollegewithouta high school diplomaorGED
are ineligible lorall stateand federal financial assistance.
Enrollment Deposit
Acceptedstudentswho plan toattendStetson are required to makean enrollmentdeposit
to indicatean intention toenroll.The non-refundabledeposit is $400 forthestudentwho
will liveon campusand $200 lorthestudentwhowill commute to theStetson campus.
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors (asdetermined bycredit hours earned) are required to live
on campus unless they plan to livewith their immediate families in the DeLandarea, ormeet
othercriteriaof theexemption policy.Thesecriteriaare listedon the Intent CO Enroll form
which thestudent receives upon admission to the Universitv. Please note that this policy may
changeaftertheprintingofthis publication.
Theenrollmentdeposit lor the Early Decision candidate isdue 30days followingaccept-
anceand is non-refundable.
Theenrollmentdeposit for the Regular Decision candidate isdueon orbefore May 1
.
CandidateswhoareacceptedafterMay 1 andplan toattendStetsonareexpected topaythe

TRANSFERS
ApplicationstotransferforthefallsemestershouldbesubmittedbyMarch 15.Afterthat
date, applicantswill beconsideredonaspace-availablebasis.Transfers mayalsoenterinthe
springsemester (deadlineis December 15), and in thesummersession (deadlineisApril 1).

Astudentwhowishesto transferto Stetson Universitymust:
1. Havecompletedasemesterofacademicworkataregionallyaccreditedcollegeoruniver-
sityatthetimeofentry, and notbeconcurrentlyenrolledinhighschool.
2. Bein goodstandingandeligibletocontinueorbereadmittedatthelast institution
attended, unlessallworkhasbeen completedorthestudenthasgraduatedfrom that
institution.
3. HaveearnedatleastaCcumulativegradepointaverage (2.0on a4.0scale) inacollege
parallelprogram. Mostsuccessful transfercandidateshaveearnedatleasta3.0grade-
pointaverage.
4. Meetallcriteriaforfirst-yearadmission iflessthan30semesterhoursofcollegecredit
havebeenearned.
Stetson Universityhonorssuspensionsofthelastinstitution, andcreditwill notbeawarded
forworktakenduringthesuspension period.
It istheresponsibilityofthecandidatetoprovidethe DeanofAdmissionsatStetson
Universitywith official transcriptsofworkcompletedfromallcollegesattended. Concealment
ofpreviousattendanceatacollegeoruniversityiscauseforcancellationofadmissionandregis-
tration.
TransferofCredits
Creditwillbeallowed forthosecoursesinwhich thestudenthasearnedagradeofC (not
C-) orbetterandareequivalenttocoursesofferedatStetson University. Evaluationofcredit
will bedoneon an individualbasis, andacopyofthatevaluationwill be mailedtothecandi-
dateafteradmission totheUniversityhasbeengranted.
