II.Values andVision
Fromitsfounding, StetsonUniversityhasaffirmedtheimportanceofspirituallifeandthe

GodandTruth"), isasymbolofthiscommitment, anditexpressesourdeterminadonto
integratethepursuitofaliberaleducationwiththesearchformeaninginourlivesandinour
commimities. Charteredasanindependentandcomprehensiveimiversity. Stetsonhashadan
historicalrelationshipwiththeChristiancommimityandtheBaptistdenominations.That
reladonshiphasshapedourcommitmenttobuildaninclusivecommunity.Today, the
Universityincludespersonsfromdiversereligious, ethnic, cultural, economic, andintellectual

III. Heritage and Character
Florida'sfirstprivateuniversity. Stetson Universitywasfoundedin 1883 byHenryA.
DeLand, aNewYorkphilanthropist, as DeLandAcademy. In 1887, theLegislatureofthe
StateofFloridaenactedtheCharterofDeLand Universityasan independent institutionof
higherlearning.TheUniversity's namewaschanged in 1889 to honorJohn B. Stetson, the
nationally-known hatmanufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhis timeand means toadvancethe
qualityandreputationoftheinstitution, andwhoserved, with Mr. DeLandandothers, asa
foimdingtrusteeoftheUniversity.ThefirstcharterstatedtheobjectoftheUniversityshould
be"topromotethegeneralinterestsofeducation, andtoqualifyitsstudentstoengagein the
learnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsofsociety, and todischargehonorablyand usefully
thevariousdutiesoflife." Stetson'sfirstpresident. Dr.John F. Forbes,clearlydescribed the
commitmenttoteachingthathasbeenahallmarkoftheUniversitythroughoutitshistory:
"Buildings, librariesandapparatusaregoodandgiveadde—d power, butthevitalcontactof
studentswithavigorousandstimulatingmindandheart thisisthesinequanonofa
successfiileducation . . .Themostimportantthingistofindmenandwomenoflarge
heartandmind, apt to teachandfiillofenthusiasm—andstimulatingpower ... todevelop
in thestudentthehabitofindependentjudgment ofinvestigatingstatementsand

Today, Stetson Universityisanon-sectarian,comprehensive, privateuniversitycomposedof

ApplicationsforStetsonUniversityshouldbesubmittedearlyinthefirstsemesterofthe
highschoolsenioryear.ThepriorityfilingdateforapplicationsforthefallsemesterisMarch
15; forthespringsemesterisNovember 15; forthesummersessionisApril 15.Applications

TheAcademic Record
Tobeconsideredforadmission, applicantsmustsatisfactorilycompleteacollegepreparatory
programinhighschool.Ashighschoolprogramsandgradingsystemsvarywidely, the
secondaryschoolprogramcannotberigidlyprescribed. Underspecialcircumstances,some
studentsmaybeadmittedtotheGeneralStudies ProgrambytheUniversityAdmissions
Committee. StudentssoadmittedmustsuccessfiallycompletetherequirementsoftheGeneral
StudiesProgramtodeclareamajorinaCollegeorSchool. However, theAdmissionsCommit-
teeismostinterestedinstudentswithsolidacademicachievementinfiveormorecollege
preparatorycourseseachofthefouryearsofhighschool.Minimunipreparationmustinclude
thefollowing:

2. Atleastthreeyearsofmath, includingAlgebraI, Geometry,andAlgebraII

Suitablecollegepreparatoryelectiveswillcompletetheapplicant's program.Agradepoint
averageofbetterthan3.0 is typical forstudentsaccepted toStetson. Internationalstudents

Admissions Notification Regular Decision Plan
RegularDecision candidatesforfalladmissionwill receivenotificationafterDecember 1.
Theadmission ofallcandidates remainsprovisional until finalgradeshavebeen submitted. If
finalgradesareunsatisfactory, Stetson Universityreservestherighttowithdrawtheofferof
admission to thestudent.

Admissions Notification Early Decision
An EarlyDecisionoption isavailabletowellqualifiedpotentialfirst-yearstudentswho
designateStetson as theirfirstchoice.Thedeadlineforreceiptofapplications forEarly
Decision forthefallsemesterisNovember 1.TheEarlyDecision PlanofStetson Universityis
intended toservethosestudentswithstronghighschool records, rankin class, gradepoint
average, SATorACTscores, andspecial potential tocontribute toandbenefit from Stetson
University.
TheEarlyDecision applicantmustsign acontractindicating(1) hisorherintention to
applyasan EarlyDecisioncandidate, (2) thatStetson is theinstitutionoffirstchoice, and (3)
thatifaccepted, heorshewillbepreparedtopaytheenrollmentdepositandwillenrollat
Stetson University.Thisstatementisacontractbetween theapplicantand theUniversity,
certifyingthatupon admission toStetson, applicationstootherschoolswill bewithdrawnand
thestudentwillattendStetson. Parentsandsecondaryschoolcounselorssign thiscontractas
well.
EarlyDecisioncandidateswillbenotifiedbeforeNovember25. Studentsofferedearly
admissionareexpectedtocommittotheUniversitywithin threeweeksofthenoticeof
admission bypaymentofanon-refundabledeposit. StudentscompletingaFinancial Early
Estimatorwill receivean EarlyDecision FinancialAidAward. EarlyDecisioneliminates
apprehension aboutcollegeacceptance. Likewise, thestudenthashousingpreferenceand is
given preferential treatmentthroughouttheadmissionprocess.
EarlyEntry
Occasionally,highschool underclassmenareinterestedinattendingStetsonasfiill dme
studentspriorto theirhighschoolgraduation. Suchstudents maybeconsideredforadmission
iftheirsecondaryschoolworkisexemplary; standardized testsshowgreatacademicpotential;
andan interviewwith the DeanofAdmissions indicates thatthestudentismatureandableto
handle theacademicaswellassocialchallengesofcollege. Suchstudents mustsubmitthesame
materials requiredofall first-yearstudentapplicanons. NOTE: It is important forEarlyEntry
candidates tobeaware thatstudentswhoentercollegewithoutahighschooldiplomaorGED
areineligibleforallstateandfederal financialassistance.
Enrollment Deposit
Acceptedstudentswhoplan toattend Stetson arerequiredto makean enrollmentdepositto
indicatean intention toenroll.Thenon-refundabledepositis $400 forthestudentwhowill
liveon campusand $200 forthestudentwhowillcommute to theStetsoncampus. Freshmen,
sophomores, andjuniors (asdeterminedbycredithoursearned) arerequired toliveon campus
unless theyplan tolivewith theirimmediate families in the DeLandarea, ormeetother
criteriaoftheexemption policy.Thesecriteriaarelistedon theIntenttoEnrollformwhich the

AstudentwhowishestotransfertoStetsonUniversitymust:

universityatthetimeofentry, andnotbeconcurrendyenrolledinhighschool.
2. Beingoodstandingandeligibletocontinueorbereadmittedatthelastinstitution
attended, unlessallworkhasbeencompletedorthestudenthasgraduatedfromthat
institution.
3. HaveearnedatleastaCciunulativegradepointaverage (2.0ona4.0scale) inacollege
parallelprogram. Mostsuccessftiltransfercandidateshaveearnedatleasta3.0grade-
pointaverage.
4. Meetallcriteriaforfirst-yearadmissioniflessthan30semesterhoursofcollegecredit
havebeenearned.
Stetson Universityhonorssuspensionsofthelastinstitution,andcreditwillnotbeawarded
forworktakenduringthesuspensionperiod.
ItistheresponsibilityofthecandidatetoprovidetheDeanofAdmissionsatStetson
