III. Heritage and Character Florida'sfirstprivateuniversity. Stetson Universitywasfoundedin 1883 byHenryA. DeLand, aNewYorkphilanthropist, as DeLandAcademy. In 1887, theLegislatureofthe StateofFloridaenactedtheCharterofDeLand Universityasan independent institutionof higherlearning.TheUniversity's namewaschanged in 1889 to honorJohn B. Stetson, the nationally-known hatmanufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhis timeand means toadvancethe qualityandreputationoftheinstitution, andwhoserved, with Mr. DeLandandothers, asa foimdingtrusteeoftheUniversity.ThefirstcharterstatedtheobjectoftheUniversityshould be"topromotethegeneralinterestsofeducation, andtoqualifyitsstudentstoengagein the learnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsofsociety, and todischargehonorablyand usefully thevariousdutiesoflife."
