Preface
A long-held tenet in the stem cell field was the belief that stem cells—defined by their
capacity for self-renewal and lineage developmental capacities—comprised a homogeneous
population.Manystudieswithisolatedpopulationsofstemcellsweredesignedandanalyzed
with this principle in mind. Nevertheless, with time, a variety of types of studies and data
suggested that heterogeneous populations or subpopulations of stem cells exist. In this
volume,Ihavepulledtogetheraseriesofprotocolsthataddressdifferentaspectsofstemcell
heterogeneity.Iamverygratefultothecontributorsfortheirtimeandgenerosityinputting
together theirconceptsandprotocols.
Once again, I would like to thank Dr. John Walker, Editor in Chief of the Methods in
MolecularBiologyseries,forhissupportandencouragement.
IamgratefultoPatrickMarton,SeniorEditoroftheMethodsinMolecularBiologyseries,
forhiscontinuoussupportthroughouttheproject.
A special“thankyou” goesto DavidCasey,Editor oftheMethodsin MolecularBiology
series,forhistirelesseffortsandsupportduringthefinalstagesofthevolumeproduction.
