StatementofPurposeofSt.AndrewsPresbyterian College St.AndrewsPresbyterianCollegeisafour-year,church-related, coeducationalliberalartsandsciencesinstitutionfoundedin1958 bythemergerofFloraMacdonaldCollege,afouryearcollegewhich openedin1896,andPresbyterianJuniorCollegewhichwasfounded in1928. Withbothresidentialandnon-residentialundergraduate programs,theCollegeservestraditionalandnon-traditionalstudents fromdiversenational,ethnicandsocio-economicbackgrounds,by offeringdegreeprograms,certificationprogramsandspecial trainingprograms. Oneofthefirstbarrier-freecampuses,the Collegetakesparticularprideinitshistoricalcommitmentto accommodatingstudentswithphysicalchallenges. St.Andrewsbreaksdownintellectualandinterpersonal barriersaswell. Membersofthefacultyworktogetheracross disciplines,recognizingtheirprimaryrolesasteachersandadvisors, whilemaintainingacommitmenttoscholarshipandprofessional developmentintheirindividualfields. Students,administratorsand staffalsotakeseriouslytheirsharedrolesinteaching,advisingand mentoring. Throughitsintegratededucationalprogram,theCollege seekstograduateinformed,articulateindividuals,witha comprehensionofthecomplexnatureoftheproblemsfacinga diversebutinterdependentglobalcommunity,andwiththeknowledge andskillsnecessarytoleadproductiveprofessionallives. AsacollegeoftheChurch,St.Andrewsbelievesthat knowledgeoftheJudeo-Christiantraditionisvitaltounderstanding theheritageofWesterncivilizationanditsplaceinthecontemporary PageT world. TruetothehistoricalPresbyteriancommitmenttointellectual inquiry,St.Andrewsviewscriticalexplorationinalldisciplinesas compatiblewithfaithfulliving. TheCollege'smajorprograms providestudentswithdepthofknowledgeinparticulardisciplines, whilealsoaffirmingthatsuchknowledgegainsinvaluewhenplaced inaninternational,interculturalandinterdisciplinarycontext. St.Andrewsunderstandsgenuinelysuccessfulacademic communitiestobeinclusiveandstudent-centered. Inadditionto offeringprogramsintheliberalartsandsciencesandinselected preprofessionalareas,theCollegefulfillsitscommunityservice responsibilityandalsopromotesexperientialandservicelearning throughinternships,communityserviceactivitiesandinternational travel/studyopportunities. Respondingtotheneedsofdiverse learningconstituencies,St.Andrewsofferseducationaland residentialenvironmentswhichenhancetheacademicenterprise throughanarrayofcareer,technologicalandothersupportservices. Dueregardforhealthylifestylesandphysicalwell-beingis encouragedthroughwellnesseducationandathleticprograms. Finally,St.Andrewsbelievesthechallengesofthefuturewill bestbemetbyinstitutionsandindividualswiththeopennessand flexibilitytoadapttorapidchange. Itthereforeengagesin systematicevaluationinordertomaintaindynamicandrelevant programs,anditencouragesstudentstodevelophabitsoflifelong learningandself-renewalwhichbalancefreedomwithresponsibility andtranscendself-interestwithaspiritofservice. (ApprovedbytheFacultyon4-23-96;andtheBondofTrusteeson4-26-96) TheUltimateAuthority FromtheBylawsoftheBoardofTrustees(ArticleVI,Section1): "Except asotherwiseprovidedhereinorintheCharteroftheCollege,theseBylaws shallcontrol andgoverninevery instancewhenevera conflictarises betweentheseBylawsandanyotherdocument" (TheappendixofthisSaltirecontainsexcerptsfromtheBylawsofthe Board ofTrusteesandtheBylaws oftheFaculty thatpertain to the governanceofstudentcommunityoncampus.) Page2 AWordofImportance Allstudentsshouldkeepinformedofpolicydecisionsmadethroughoutthe collegeyearbytheEducationalPolicyCommitteeandtheStudentLife Committee. Thesedecisions,whenapprovedbythefacultyandthepresi- dentofthecollege,mayalter,qualify,orreplacetheconditionsasstatedin theSaltire. MaterialintheSaltireissubjecttochange.Thecollegeisnot responsiblefortypographicalerrors,accidentalomissions,orsimilarerrors. TheCodeofConductfortheSt.AndrewsCommunity (AcceptedbytheSt.AndrewsCommunitySpringof1996) Preamble AllmembersoftheSt.AndrewsCollegeCommunitymustbe responsiblefortheirchoicesofbehaviorandmakesurethatthesebehaviors donotinfringeuponothercommunitymembers. TheCollegehasthe authorityandresponsibilitytoestablishrulesandstandardswhichmay requireacademic,moral,andethicalbehaviorthatisconsideredabovethe standardsofsocietyatlarge. Theprincipalresponsibilityforproper conductrestswitheachstudent,andasmuchaspossible,s/heisencouraged toresolveconflictsofindividualrightsandresponsibilitiesher/himself. TheCollegewillbecomeinvolved,however,whenastudentcannotresolve aconflicther/himself,whenthereexistsareasonablebasistobelievethat local,state,orfederallawshavebeenbroken;whentherecouldbeoris potentialforpersonalharmorpropertydamage;orwhenthereexistsa reasonablebasistobelievethatCollegeconditionsorpolicieshavebeen violated. St.Andrewsrequiresstudentstoobeylocal,stateandfederallaws. TheCollegedoesreservetherighttoholdresponsiblestudentswhose behavioreitheronoroffcampusblemishestheCollege'sgeneralimageor reputation,orotherwiseevidencesdisregardforthesafety,well-beingor rightsofothers. Ifastudentisinvolvedinanillegalactoffcampus,the Collegedoesreservetherighttoinitiatedisciplinaryaction. Page3
