What are your dreams? What are your passions? What’s your magnificent obsession? Where do you want to go with your life? When you know what you want, and have created a plan — A Master Plan of ACTion — to get you there, every- thing else falls into place. This book is going to show you how to set — and achieve — your goals so you can make your dreams come true. Success Depends Upon Your Expectations Life isn’t lived in a vacuum, and whether or nor you are Try your best, successful in any endeavor is determined by your expecta- tions before you start. You’ve got to know the criteria by learn from your which you’re going to judge yourself. experiences, and get better at the Most of us aren’t 100 percent successful in the things we do. But the goal is to try your best, learn from your expe- things you do riences, take the knowledge you’ve gained along the way, so you can grow and develop, and get better at the things you do. Success Comes From Participation Everything in life depends upon your frame of reference. Where you are, where you came from, and where you want to go. But most importantly, you should feel that you are a success when you try, when you participate, when you go out there and put yourself on the line. 8 __________________________________________________ Setting and Achieving Your Goals Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you’re already doing. It’s growing and developing. It’s accepting bigger and greater challenges. It’s not being Success is trying afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or of to improve upon failing. It’s trying to do your very best. the things you’re And if, in the end, your very best wasn’t quite good doing enough. We’ll then, you’ve just got to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time. Someone once pointed out to Thomas Edison that he had failed because he had spent a lot of time and effort trying to create the electric lightbulb. Edison, on the other hand, felt that he had been successful because he had found thousands of different things that didn’t work. He knew he wasn’t going to stop until he found something that did work. Yes, we’re all going to go through life and make mistakes, have failures, and not achieve the results we want. But many of these setbacks can be avoided and/or minimized by spending more time think- ing and planning before we start to do some- thing. When you’re able to goals, that you recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure, and losing, are as much a part of the game of life succeed as is success and winning. So embrace your goals, dreams and desires. Pour your energy into completing those daily tasks. Go out and play your game, and play it to win! But don’t think only of winning games, think of winning championships! 9 __________________________________________________ Setting and Achieving Your Goals The 13 Characteristics of Successful People I’ve spent many years studying successful people and have identified the skills, talents, and characteristics that enable them to succeed. As you look at and study these skills, talents, and characteristics, you’ll realize that you possess many of them yourself. Some of these skills and talents are more dominant than others and will play a greater part in your being, or be- coming, a success in the business of life. These are the things you do well. You build upon You build upon your skills. These are the things you do your skills, the easily and effortlessly. Skills and talents that complement your own. These people will become your teammates, colleagues, co-workers, professional advisors, and friends. With these combined skills and talents organizations grow, prosper, and become successful. These are the five things you’ll find every successful person has in common: 1. They have a dream. 2. They have a plan. 3. They have specific knowledge or training. 4. They’re willing to work hard. 5. They don’t take no for an answer. 10 __________________________________________________ Setting and Achieving Your Goals Remember: Success begins with a state of mind. You must believe you’ll be successful in order to become a suc- cess. The following is a list of the skills, talents, and characteris- tics you’ll find in successful people: 1. Successful People Have a Dream Have a well-defined purpose, a definite goal. Know what you want. Don’t be easily influenced by the thoughts and Your strong desire opinions of others. Have I-Willpower. Think up new brings strong ideas. Your strong desire brings strong results. Go out and results. Remember: People who excel in life are those who pro- duce results, not excuses. Anybody can come up with excuses and explanations for why he hasn’t made it. Those who want to succeed badly enough don’t make excuses. Warren Buffet, the most successful investor in history, doesn’t invest in high-tech businesses because he doesn’t feel competent in this par- ticular area, so he stays away from it. He doesn’t understand the industry well enough to properly value technology companies. He does however know — and understand — low- tech stuff very well and that’s where he fo- cuses his time, effort and energies.
