Ifirststartingteachingthismaterialinthelate1970sattheUniversityofLancaster inEngland.Iwrotethefirstversionofthisbook,publishedin1981,toaccompanya 6-weekcourseIdevelopedthere.Teachingthesamekindofmaterialadecadelater intheU.S.,Ilookedattheoriginalversion,founditwanting,andcompletelyrewrote it.Ichangedalmosteverything:Ireorderedthetopics,changedthetreatmentofeach topic,andincreasedthenumberofexercises.Thatsecondeditionwaspublishedin 1992. OnedecisionI facedwhenI wrote thesecondeditionwas thesize ofthe book. The originaledition was deliberatelywritten as a “little book”that wouldbe both unintimidatingandcheap.Atthetime,therewerenocompetingbooksonthemarket (atleastintheU.K.),andasaresultthebookdidquitewell.BythetimeIcameto writethesecondedition,therewasawholeslewofbooks(intheU.S.)targetedat the same students.All of these bookswere far more substantialthan mine and,in keepingwiththetrendintextbookpublishing,gettinglargerallthetimeinafurious struggle to be all things to all students and to include everythingthat appearedin anycompetingbook.Ilookedatthosebooksanddecidedfirmly—Ihadtobefirm becausemypublisherhadotherideas—tostickwithmyoriginalplan:Despitethe manychangesthatI felt werenecessary,thesecondeditionwouldremaina “little book”. Nowanotherdecadehaspassedandthetimehascometorewritethebookonce again. Not because the core material has changed; that is the same now as it was whenImyselfwasastudentinthe1960s.Whathaschangedisthebackgroundthat the beginningstudentbringsto his or her studyand the environmentin whichthe study is carriedout. This new versionof the booktries to take those changes into account.ButIstillbelievethatforthismaterial,smallisbetter. vii Students Start Here If youarea mathematicsinstructor,thisbookwill tell youabsolutelynothingyou donotalreadyknow.AssumingyouhavereadthePreface(whichwaswrittenforin- structors,undertheassumptionthatstudentsneverreadprefacesbutinstructorsusu- allydo),youreallydonotneedtoreadanyfurtherinthisbookthanthisparagraph. Those two sentences are the last ones in the entire book directed at instructors. Everything else (including this paragraph) is written for the beginning student of post-calculusuniversity-levelmathematics(“you”,fromnowon). Youhavecompletedcoursesondifferentialandintegralcalculus.Maybeyouaced thosecourses;ormaybeyougotthroughonlyafterastruggle.Eitherway,nowyou aretryingtomakethetransitiontowhatcomesnext.Chancesare,regardlessofyour performanceinmathematicsupuntilnow,youaregoingtofindthenextstepunfa- miliarandchallenging.Thisbookwon’tmakeiteasy.Nobookcandothat.Anyone whoclaimsotherwiseistryingtosellyouabook—probablyathick,expensiveone atthat.1Butafterguidingmanygenerationsofyoungpeoplethroughpreciselythis difficulttransition,2IthinkIcanhelp. The main distinction between most high-school mathematics and post-calculus universitymathliesinthedegreeofrigorandabstractionrequiredattheuniversity level.Ingeneral,you(astudentembarkingonpost-calculusuniversitymathematics) willhavehadlittleornopriorexperienceofwhollyrigorousdefinitionsandproofs. Theresultisthat,althoughyoumaybecompetenttohandlequitedifficultproblems incalculus,youarelikelytofindyourselftotallylostwhenpresentedwitharigorous definition of limits and derivatives— the fundamentalmathematical ideas that lie behindcalculus. Ineffect,whatyouneedinordertoprogressfurtherinmathematicsistoacquire masteryofwhatisvirtuallyanentirenewlanguage(“thelanguageofmathematics”) andtoadoptanentirelynewmodeofthinking(“mathematicalthinking”).Through- outmymanyyearsteachinguniversitymathematics,3Ihavemetveryfewstudents whocamethroughthisprocesswithoutagreatdealofdifficulty.(Icertainlydidn’t whenIwasastudent.)Thisbookisintendedtoassistyouinmakingthistransition.
