Foreword IHE ACS SYMPOSIUM SERIES was first published in 1974 to provide a mechanism for publishing symposia quickly in book form. The purpose of this series is to publish comprehensive books developed from symposia, which are usually "snapshots in time" of the current research being done on a topic, plus some review material on the topic. For this reason, it is necessary that the papers be published as quickly as possible. Before a symposium-based book is put under contract, the proposed table of contents is reviewed for appropriateness to the topic and for comprehensiveness of the collection. Some papers are excluded at this point, and others are added to round out the scope of the volume. In addition, a draft of each paper is peer-reviewed prior to final acceptance or rejection. This anonymous review process is supervised by the organizer(s) of the symposium, who become the editor(s) of the book. The authors then revise their papers according to the recommendations of both the reviewers and the editors, prepare camera-ready copy, and submit the final papers to the editors, who check that all necessary revisions have been made. As a rule, only original research papers and original review papers are included in the volumes. Verbatim reproductions of previously published papers are not accepted. Preface A MAJORITY OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES involve, at least at some stage, the separation of a compound by crystallization or its purification by recrystallization. Considerable research has been done in recent years in the crystallization field, and important findings have led to a better understanding of the crystallization phenomenon and to considerable improvements in the practice. These changes, however, reveal new levels of complexity in the crystallization process. At the same time, technological advances necessitate the use of crystallization in new processes, such as biochemical processes, and in the production of new compounds, such as biomolecules. For these reasons, the level of interest in crystallization has been continually increasing. To satisfy this increased interest, international meetings dedicated to crystallization are organized, such as the one sponsored every three years by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. In addition, both the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers include crystallization symposia in their national and international meetings. This volume was developed from a crystallization symposium presented at the 1995 International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies (Pacifichem '95) in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 17-22, 1995. The symposium included 50 contributions, presented in oral and poster sessions, from nine countries. This volume contains 23 chapters organized in five sections. More than a third of the chapters deal with the crystallization of polymorphic compounds that can crystallize in more than one form and the crystallization of chiral compounds. This emphasis is a reflection of the current interest in these two fields. The other four areas are basic studies, studies related to industrial crystallizers and processes, and two areas involving crystallization of particular organic and inorganic compounds. A different organization of the book would have shown that 10 of the papers deal with aspects of crystallization of proteins, amino acids, and pharmaceuticals, a sign of the increased activity in this area of crystallization.
