I have. And I’ve come to the conclusion that most self-help methods are too complicated, take too much time, and many of them are just downright boring. I’m sure you already know that there are hundreds of ways to seek self-improvement. And there are just as many experts with techniques who can help you in that quest. In fact, there are so many that the choices are overwhelming. To pursue them all would take several life- times. Even to pursue a few takes commitment, time, and usually money—sometimes a great deal of money. What’s worse is that often- times, even after much ado, there is little improvement to show for one’s efforts. I recently talked to a self-improvement enthusiast who had gone to a very expensive seminar featuring a well-known motivational speaker who promises people success, primarily in the area of career and finances. This highly charismatic speaker (and way too gifted salesman) reveals to his audiences relatively workable techniques, most of which he gleaned from other experts. And the feverish excitement stirred up at his seminars cannot be discounted for its motivational (albeit short- lived) effects. Anyway, the enthusiast extolled the virtues of the speaker along with the expert advice and techniques he disclosed. But upon closer inquiry I uncovered three disturbing things.
