Printed in Germany Cover design: Christopher Schneider, Berlin Acknowledgements This collection of essays records a dialogue on thinking anew about system for contemporary theology and philosophy. The dialogue took place at a symposium entitled, "System and Life: Schleiermacher and Whitehead," held on March 6-8, 2003 at the Claremont School of Theology and the Center for Process Studies in Claremont, California. I thank Prof. Dr. Mar- jorie Hewitt Suchocki for her wholehearted support of the project and for the opportunity to teach a spirited seminar on Schleiermacher and White- head with her during the spring term 2003. I also thank Prof. Dr. John Quiring for his patient and detailed organization of the conference and for hospitality at the Center for Process Studies, especially for the chocolates! My gratitude goes to the authors who each contributed a chapter to this volume. I thank them for having engaged the topic, for having pressed it for its dialogical possibilities, and for having cleared creative paths for constructive systematic thinking. The financial aspect is not only necessary for the facilitation of academic dialogue, but represents the confidence of the funding institutions in such an endeavor. I am grateful to the Claremont School of Theology, especially to President Philip A. Amerson and to Dean John R. Fitzmier, as well as to the Center for Process Studies, for extending financial grace to both the conference and the book. The final preparation of this volume for publica- tion was done during a sabbatical leave in the spring of 2004. I thank both the Claremont School of Theology for granting me a research leave and the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung for generously funding my stay as a Humboldt Research Fellow at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen. The production of this book is the result of wisdom, expertise, and time, all granted by the following colleagues. My sincere appreciation goes to Dr. K. F. Diethard Römheld, who typeset the articles with an infectious happiness that permeated the electronic communication of this bi-conti- nental book. I thank Dr. Albrecht Döhnert, editor for theology, Jew- ish studies, and religious studies at Walter de Gruyter, for his enthusiastic guidance of this project from start to finish and for his serious commit- ment to the international, "bilingual," and open dialogue represented by VI Acknowledgements this collection. And I also thank Prof. Dr. Oswald Bayer, Prof. Dr. Wil- fried Härle, and Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Müller, for kindly consenting to ac- cept this volume in Walter deGruyter's Theologische Bibliothek Töpel- mann series. This book would not have been possible without the editorial efforts of Prof. Dr. Marjorie Hewitt Suchocki, Prof. Dr. John Quiring, and Katie Goetz. I am grateful to them for their generosity of editing spirit, and especially to Katie, for her incredible attention to both detail and the big picture and for sustaining the production by cheerfully mediating all levels of intersubjective dialogue. The dialogue with Prof. Dr. Robert A. Orsi was an invitation to live. I thank him for the joy of lived novelty that transforms and sustains identity.
