Sincethereleaseofthefirsteditionin1994,theschedulingfieldhasseenmany newdevelopmentsthatareofinteresttotheoreticiansandpractitionersalike.Clearly, neweditionsofthebook, withextensionsindifferentdirections, weretobeexpected. However, the basic general setup and structure of the book has not changed over the years. It still consists of three main parts: Deterministic Models, Stochastic Models, andSchedulinginPractice.TherearealsofourAppendixesthatpresentthe basics of mathematical programming, dynamic programming, constraint program- ming, and complexity theory, as well as three Appendixes that provide overviews ofthecomplexitystatusesofseveralclassesofdeterministicschedulingproblems, of the tractability of a variety of stochastic scheduling problems, and of the latest developmentsinschedulingsystemdesignsandimplementations. Sinceitsintroductionin1994thisbookhasundergoneanumberofexpansions, withextensionsinareasthathavearousedinterestinacademiaaswellasinindustry. These extensions have included over the years multi-objective scheduling, batch scheduling, and proportionate flow shop scheduling. The additions in this sixth editionincludedeterministicflowshopmodelswithreentry(i.e.,schedulingmodels thatareofinteresttothesemiconductormanufacturingindustry),stochasticmodels with due date related objective functions, Fixed Parameter Tractability (FPT) of deterministic scheduling problems, as well as more discussions regarding recent scheduling system implementations. The latest updates of the various tables in AppendixesE,F,andGhavebeenextensive. NewYork,USA MichaelL.Pinedo Spring2022 The Gantt Chart: Its Originators Every practitioner and researcher in the scheduling field has used Gantt charts as a scheduling tool. The origins of these famous charts are interesting; they were developed independently in Poland and in the US in the late nineteenth and early twentiethcentury. In 1896 the Polish engineer and economist Karol Adamiecki developed what he called the harmonogram, which he used in the management of a steel rolling millinsouthernPoland.AdamieckipublishedhistechniquesinthePolishmagazine PrzegladTechniczny(TechnicalReview)in1909. Shortlythereafter,HenryLaurenceGantt, anindustrialengineerworkinginthe steelindustryintheUS,developed hischartsforevaluatingproductionschedules. Gantt discussed the principles underlying his charts in his book “Organizing for Work,”whichwaspublishedjustbeforehisdeathin1919.SinceGanttcommunicated inEnglishandAdamieckiinPolish, thesetypesofchartsareintheEnglishliterature usuallyreferredtoasGanttcharts.
