CharlotteAullDaviesexamineswhyreflexivity,atbothpersonal
and broader cultural levels, should be integrated into ethnographic
research and discusses how this can be accomplished for a variety
of research methods. She introduces students to data collection
methods including participant observation, interviewing, visual
methods, narrative and auto-ethnography along with analysis of
findings and writing up. This revised and updated second edition

Postmodernistrelativismcanleadtoanover-emphasisonreflexivity
that denies the possibility of social research. Reflexive Ethnography
utilizes postmodernist insights – incorporation of different stand-
points, exposure of the intellectual tyranny of meta-narratives
– but proposes that reflexive ethnographic research be undertaken
fromarealistperspective.ReflexiveEthnographywillhelpstudents
to use and understand ethnographic research practices that fully
incorporate reflexivity without abandoning claims to develop valid
knowledgeofsocialreality.

Anthropology, as an academic discipline, has been slow to develop
an explicit concern with either research methods or the provision
ofresearchtraining.Thus,assomeonewhosepostgraduatetraining
took place in the 1970s, I was fortunate to have been required to
prepare an annotated bibliography of anthropological sources on
researchmethodsbeforeundertakingmyfirstmajorfieldwork.This
task at least made me think not only about what I wanted to find
out but how I might do so, and I am grateful to my supervisor,
RichardFox,forsuggestingittome,aswellasforhisguidanceand
encouragementsubsequently.
Ihavelearnedmostaboutresearchmethodsfromthepeoplewhose
socialcircumstancesandculturalunderstandingsIhavestudied.Some
ofthem,andtheresearchinwhichtheycooperated,arereferredto
in this book. But all of them, whether explicitly mentioned or not,
havehelpedtodevelopmyideasaboutethnographicresearch,andI

Itistobewelcomedthatethnographyandethnographicwritinghave
cometobeaccepted,asresearchandreportingstrategies,inawide
range of subject areas from cultural and literary studies to applied
social sciences. Unfortunately, in some instances, ethnography has
become scarcely more than a legitimizing label for activities that
bearlittlerelationtotheevolvingtraditionofethnographicresearch
andwritingasitisunderstoodinthedisciplineinwhichitwasfirst
developed and for which it continues to be a core strategy. In this
volume,Idiscussthephilosophyandpracticeofethnographyfrom
theperspectiveofanthropology,thedisciplinewhichoriginatedthis
distinctive methodology for learning about human societies and
culturesandwhichhasdeveloped,modifiedandrefinedit,bymeans
of example and critique, over most of the past century. I hope that
this book will prove useful to professional anthropologists, as well
asprovidingaresourceforthoseinotherdisciplineswhochooseto
usethiscomplexbutrewardingstrategyintheirresearch.
Sadly, I currently feel a great sense of irony in writing about the
centralityofanthropologytothepracticeofethnographyinthatthe
administrationofmyownuniversityhasrecentlytakenadecisionto
‘disinvest’inanthropologyandinoursisterdisciplineof sociology.
The consequence of this action is the gradual disappearance of
thesetwodisciplinesbothfromtheuniversityandfromtheareaof
southwestWalesthatweprincipallyserve.Isincerelyhopewemay
see their eventual return in a future less driven by the accounting
culturethatcurrentlycontrolshighereducation.
