"turn your steps to the north,following an Indian pat~,you erose a
ravine,and draw near the edge of a bluff,where now,on the plane above,
is the residence Hon.George Hastings-and here,almost on the very
o~
site of his residence,probably between his house and barn,you will
find a long,log house,the residence of Sbenezer Allen.~

Allen mill was erected in 1789 for the sake of gaining
~he
title to the adjoining land. A person now living in the City
returning from the mill,has been followed to his own door
by wolves,and so late as 1800 the mill was not supporting
itself,was left vaoant;and any of the settlers as they had

oooasion,went to it,ground their own grain,olosed the mill
and returned at their leisure. And this is a place which is
now the largest flour manufactory in the world~
