It was a period of exhil- arating progress in the subject. Frege, Dedekind, Russell, Wittgen- stein, Hilbert, and Carnap produced accounts of arithmetic that were brilliantly innovative both technically and philosophically. All are de- scribedhere. ButalloftheseauthorsstoodinKant’sshadow,andallof ustodaystandinGo¨del’s. Sotheworkofthesetwoauthorsisdiscussed as well. The writing was greatly assisted by two periods of leave, at the De- partment of Logic and Metaphysics at the University of St. Andrews, and at the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University.
