Hongjun Li Foreword 1 R ecently, due to the active measures for prevention and control of AIDS, the number of patients infected with HIV/AIDS has decreased in China. However, the situation is still severe in cer- tain regions and specifi c populations because of the threats HIV/AIDS has posed. Years of clinical research and practice have proved that the combination of diagnostic imaging with clinical pathology plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS, espe- cially for concurrent opportunistic infections and neoplasms. Based on years of clinical practice and applied research, Professor Li Hongjun has already published several relevant monographs. On this basis, he organized an editorial board for another monograph in this fi eld, P ractical Diagnostic Imaging of HIV/AIDS, which is to be published. The book consists of 3 parts and 26 chapters, with about two million words and more than 2,500 fi gures. Its contents include a fundamental part about HIV/AIDS as well as the general and systematic clinics on HIV/AIDS. Recent progresses in this fi eld are supple- mented into the book, which is clearly structured, comprehensive and detailed. I sincerely congratulate the publication of the book and expect the book will promote the development of diagnostic imaging on HIV/AIDS in China. Thus, the development of diag- nostic imaging on HIV/AIDS will be greatly promoted. Chinese Engineering Academician Fuwai Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Beijing, China On Oct. 2011 vii Foreword 2 T he AIDS epidemic in China has attracted extensive and intensive attention from both the society and government. The epidemic has generally been at a low prevalence, but has a high prevalence in specifi c populations and some areas. Because the leading cause of death in AIDS patients is the occurrence of AIDS-related diseases, the early diagnosis of AIDS-related dis- eases constitutes an important measure to improve the patient’s quality of life and to prolong their life. AIDS is different from other diseases, in its specifi city and complexity, which poses new challenges in its diagnosis and treatment to medical personnel and scientifi c researchers. Professor Li Hongjun has been studying the diagnostic imaging of HIV/AIDS for up to 13 years, and has already published several monographs, including Clinical and Imaging Diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, Atlas of Differential Imaging Diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, Atlas of Differential Imaging Diagnosis of HIV/AIDS Related Ophthalmopathy, and Comparative Atlas of HIV/AIDS in Anatomy, Diagnostic Imaging and Pathology. In the way of combined theory and practices, the cases data were analyzed in details to guide the related clinical prac- tices. In this book, Professor Li Hongjun further summarizes recent researches and clinical experiences. The fi nished manuscript, Practical Diagnostic Imaging of HIV/AIDS effectively integrates the related resources nationwide, including experts and clinical data. And the book contains more than two million words and more than 2,500 fi gures, covering 3 parts and 26 chapters. Its content includes the basic sciences of HIV/AIDS, basic clinical sciences and their clinical application. Especially, in the last chapter, functional imaging fi ndings of HIV/AIDS are innovatively demonstrated. Most data in the book is published for the fi rst time. Professor Li Hongjun and his team have intensively studied the diagnostic imaging data of Chinese with HIV/AIDS. Their achievements include the spectrum of AIDS-related diseases in Chinese, the relationship between the diagnostic imaging and clinical pathology of AIDS- related diseases, the characteristic features of the diagnostic imaging in HIV/AIDS. All his works are valuable for early and accurate diagnosis of AIDS-related diseases, preventing the ix
