Program Book Welcome message On behalf of the board of the Brazilian Materials Research Society (B-MRS), I welcome all the participants to its 2017 Meeting in Gramado, state of Rio Grande do Sul. The B-MRS Annual Meeting has become of the most important events in Brazil and Latin America, in which high-level research and technology akin to all areas of materials science and engineering are discussed and disseminated. This year meeting will contain 22 symposia and 2 workshops on key areas for the community and for the country as a whole. One workshop will be dedicated to training young researchers in academic writing while the other deals with sustainable development of raw materials. Attention paid to students and young researchers has been a hallmark of B-MRS to pave the way for future generations. May I also highlight the variety of topics covered in the 8 plenary lectures to be delivered by internationally renowned scientists. These include the Costa Ribeiro Memorial Lecture through which B-MRS pays tribute to a scientist with outstanding contributions to Brazilian science and technology. Following a tradition of holding the annual meeting in different regions of Brazil, Gramado was chosen for the 2017 edition for being one of the most pleasant touristic cities in the country, in a state that hosts universities and research centers of excellence. Let me finish by thanking the organizers and sponsors of the 2017 B-MRS Meeting, particularly in a time of so many difficulties in research funding. I wish all the participants a very fruitful week in Gramado. Osvaldo Novais De Oliveira Jr. President of Brazil MRS 1 Welcome to the XVI Brazilian MRS Society Meeting Dear Participants, It is a pleasure to welcome you to the XVI Brazil-Materials Research Society (B-MRS) Annual Meeting, held in the city of Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul from 10th to 14th of September 2017. This year we gather almost 1,500 participants, with 1,923 accepted abstracts. Sixteen years after the first annual meeting of the B-MRS our figures are impressive, because of the large number of participants and abstracts as well as the high quality of the scientific contributions, divided in oral and poster presentations. The XVI B-MRS Annual Meeting is comprised of 22 Symposia, 1 workshop and 1 Tutorial. The conference this year has brought together a rich diversity of authors and speakers from Brazil, Latin America and from various distant places around the world. All with a common objective to share ideas and new perspectives on a wide range of research and technologies, such as (nano)materials and synthesis, characterization and modification of materials, energy and sustainability, biomaterials and soft materials and sol-gel materials: solution chemistry and applications. The program also includes 7 Plenary Lectures from the most prestigious scientists in cutting edge materials science. The Opening Ceremony will start with the Memorial Lecture “Joaquim da Costa Ribeiro”; the renowned scientist João Alziro H. da Jornada will talk about the new perspectives on materials science and innovation in Brazil. During the Closing Ceremony, the symposium organizers will honor students with the “Bernard Gross Award” for the best poster and best oral presentations of each Symposium. Awards from the American Chemical Society (ACS) will be also granted for best posters and oral contributions. The Conference will strive to offer plenty of networking opportunities, providing you with the opportunity to meet and interact with the leading scientists and researchers, friends and colleagues; a particular important experience for our students. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to thank the Brazil-MRS staff and board, the funding agencies, the symposium organizers, the local committee members, the program committee as well as sponsors and exhibitors for their commitment and great effort to make this Meeting possible. I hope you will find the Meeting scientifically stimulating and inspiring. Encouraging the exchange of scientific ideas and providing excellent opportunities for new insights and collaborations. We have always aimed high for fostering scientific development in the Material Science field.
