PREFACE
This e-book came about as a single source of information about the numerous,
diverse and extensive professional contributions made by Professor Arun S. Mujumdar
over almost four decades as a dedicated educator, an accomplished researcher and
research advisor and an exceptional mentor. The professional service contributions
made by him are also peerless when one examines qualitatively and qualitatively the
scope and impact what his service to academia and industry and possibly nations as well.
As a first attempt to bring this information to the public in an easily accessible way,
this freely downloadable e-book is a collection of articles and essays written about him
and his contributions in diverse locations. Thus, there is some repetition but also several
exclusions. However, the information is factual and will serve the needs of most readers.
A later edition will attempt to remove the kinks where needed and possible.
Here we can get a good panoramic view of his accomplishments as an academic. He
also has had great industrial experience almost throughout his academic career- a rare
thing for an academic in almost all parts of the world. He mentored over 50 PhDs. His
publication record is exception for an engineering professor anywhere. The impact of
his work can be readily measured using conventional metrics like citations, impact
factors, h factor etc although Prof. Mujumdar dismisses them as incorrect indicators
since they measure academic and not engineering impact. Although a prolific writer
himself, he says publications are a valuable by-product not the goal of academic
research.
I hope that this collection will be useful to students, faculty and industry people as
well as policy makers and granting agencies. A lot can be learnt from his record and his
writings. I hope that this compilation will serve as a beacon and as an inspiration to the
younger generation of engineers and educators all over the world. His personal
knowledge and experience which spans the whole world is truly unmatched by any
