Theintegratedlessonsuseawholelanguageapproachforinvestigatingandparticipatinginsocial studies and science concepts which are recommendedin thecurrent Alberta Education curriculum. This is the secondedition ofPrideinAlberta. Revisions have been made tothe pilotedition which I hope will reflecttheconcernsofteachers whoevaluatedthe activities in theirclassrooms. Probably the mostobviouschangeisthattheformat is nowthreeseparatehandbooks whicharedesignedforindividual grade levels. I would, however, encourage teachers who may wish to borrow lessons not specifically designedforthisgradeleveltodoso. Theseactivitiesareintendedtobemodifiedandadaptedtoyourspecial needsandtheparticularneedsandinterestsofyourstudents. Manyeducatorswhohaveattendedworkshops which highlightthesehandbooks haveexpressedthe usefulnessofthehandbooks forenrichmentandsplit classes. I sincerely hope that they can be usedeffectively in yourclassrooms. To assistyou in the useofthisresource, Iwouldlike todrawyourattention to afewofthe features ofthehandbook. First, andprobablymostuseful, is theCurriculum Connection Chart. Use this to select activitiesforparticularsubjectsandtopics. Thiswillgiveyouanoverviewofthehandbookandshouldhelp youtoinclude someofthismaterial inyouroverallplan. Second,eachactivityincludes acoveringlesson summiu'ywhichshouldfurtherclarifytheactivityincludingobjectivesandmaterialsrequired. Lessonplans andresourcesshouldmakeforsimplifiedpreparationandexecution. Thestudentworksheetsareintended tobeusedasthoughtandactivityorganizersratherthanaworkbookapproachtoseatwork. Thesemaybe mosteffectively used in organizing student group work and the planning ofindependent work ortasks. Alberta Agriculture film library and publications library may have some additional relevant resources. You are encouraged to write forapublication list and a film catalogue. ACTIVITY OUTLINE Individual activities in this book have been written in a standard way andeach one includes the following sections: 1. The Title 2. Study Question aquestion tofocus the activity; try toansweritbefore goingahead. 3. The Activity aconcise statement ofwhat students do. 4. Curriculum Fit suggests which subject is emphasized in the activity andgives you aprecise reference to curriculum statements found in your provincial curriculum guides for Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. 5. Agriculture Concepts suggests what students will learn about agriculture, 6. Purpose a briefdescription ofthe goal behind the activity, 7. Materials Required a list ofmaterials you will needforthe activity, 8. Time Required estimated time needed to complete the activity. 9. Background For the Teacher a briefoverview ofthe activity and sometimes neededbackground information forcompletion ofthe activity. 10. Procedure a brief description of suggested steps to follow in introducing, carrying out, andconcluding the activity; marginal notations high- light the steps andreflect the curriculum areas. 11. Discussion Questions a brieflist ofquestions that can be used in adiscussion. 12. Related Activities additional activities that grow out of the main activity, but may require additionalresources as well as time. 13.
