TheissueofthemonarchydidnotstandaloneinIreland.Entangledwith itwasthequestionofhowtherestorationoftheoldregimewouldaffecta Protestant colonial community which had changed in character and for- tune as a result of the Cromwellian conquest, the immigration that had accompanieditandthemassivetransferoflandthatfollowed.Asthereturn ofCharlesbecameincreasinglyprobable,Cromwellianandpre-Cromwel- liansettlerswereunitedintheirdeterminationtoensurethattherestora- tionofCharlesdidnotdeprivethemoftheirgains.Thisaccountdiscloses howtheleadersoftheProtestantestablishmentprotecteditsinterestsby managingthetransitionbacktomonarchy.
