Prather Chair LOC Division of Animal Science University of Missouri, USA [email protected] Welcome WELCOME FROM THE LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE I am delighted to welcome you to the 10th International Conference on Pig Reproduction in Columbia, Missouri. The Local Organizing Committee (Toshi Ezashi, Rod Geisert, Jon Green, Karl Kerns, Bill Lamberson, Matt Lucy, Tom McFadden, Mike Roberts, Tim Safranski, Peter Sutovsky and Kevin Wells) has arranged a fantastic meeting. Not only are there talks about the latest in technology that benefits both applied and basic sides, practical information will be shared that advances our understanding of reproduction in pigs. For the 10th International Conference on Pig Reproduction we invited 26 speakers representing 10 different countries that include North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Twelve abstracts were carefully selected for both an oral presentation and the opportunity to submit an extended abstract. These two formats provide a great forum for presentation of the very latest information in an expanded structure. An exciting aspect of this meeting is publication of the plenary talk review papers in the journal, Molecular Reproduction and Development. In the past, review papers from this meeting were published after the meeting, were inconvenient to acquire, were not reported by PubMed, and thus, were not widely cited. Getting the review papers in Molecular Reproduction and Development is a great coup. The national and international exposure resulting from this collection of review papers should elevate the recognition of this important meeting. We hope you enjoy your time at The University of Missouri, the state’s largest and most comprehensive university. This wide range of learning, encourages interdisciplinary teaching, research and scholarship and is one in only six public universities in the U.S. to offer a medical school, veterinary medicine college and law school. MU is a scenic campus, (our main campus is a designated botanic garden), but also make sure to wander into downtown Columbia, just north of campus, to enjoy a range of eating and nightlife options. Tuesday night dinner is on your own, and a great time to get the feel of Columbia. Also, the nearby MKT Trail, just west of campus, is great for a walk. Our meeting has generated unprecedented support. The sponsors need to be thanked by every single attendee, as their contributions allowed us to dramatically reduce the costs of attending the meeting. Thank you sponsors for your generous support! Also make sure to thank the MU Conference Office staff for their hard work. This meeting would not be as organized and professionally presented if it were not for their efforts. I hope you all have a fruitful meeting and benefit from the rich scientific programs, strengthen your professional networks among the attendees, and leave with a renewed outlook for our students and community. We hope you enjoy the Midwestern culture, hospitality, scenery, and community, and especially enjoy the meeting content. Let us know if can help in any way during your stay here. Randy Prather Chair, Local Organizing Committee 1 Welcome WELCOME FROM THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE It is a pleasure to welcome you, on behalf of the International Organising Committee (IOC), to the 10th International Conference on Pig Reproduction at the University of Missouri in Colombia, Missouri, USA. We hope that you will find the meeting scientifically stimulating, that you will enjoy interacting with friends and colleagues (old and new!) and that you will leave inspired after a very worthwhile meeting. We have worked hard to create a scientific programme that brings together state-of-the-art approaches to reproductive biology in the pig with an awareness of current knowledge gaps and potential solutions. The structure of the meeting with parallel sessions addressing both contemporary approaches and practical applications reflects this focus. We would like to thank all the invited speakers for accepting our invitation and for the timely production of abstracts and manuscripts. As occurred during the two most recent meetings, authors of some abstracts describing particularly novel research were invited to extend their abstract and to give an oral presentation. We would like thank these authors for agreeing to speak at the meeting and for providing extended abstracts. Huge thanks are due to the editorial staff at Molecular Reproduction and Development and to the co-editors from the IOC (Dr Billy Flowers and Dr Heriberto Rodriguez-Martinez) for their commitment to the timely publication of ‘Control of Pig Reproduction X’. We would also like to thank all the commercial sponsors who have contributed to this meeting. The generosity and foresight of organisations who invest in a meeting such as this is much appreciated. This conference would not be taking place without the superb efforts of all the Local Organising Committee, chaired by Dr Randy Prather. I am confident that their careful planning and attention to detail will ensure that we all enjoy a memorable and inspiring conference. Cheryl J.
