Pierre Bourdieu, Organisation, and Management Pierre Bourdieu, the French sociologist, philosopher, and anthropologist, has been widely studied and analysed in academic circles, particularly in sociology, where his ideas about power relations in social life helped to defi ne the contemporary fi eld. While many other sociological theories and fi gures have been extensively discussed and analysed within the contexts of organisation studies and management, Bour- dieu’s ideas have, until recently, been largely ignored. Offering an authoritative eval- uation of Bourdieu’s work, this book provides readers with conceptual frameworks, empirical examples, and methodological considerations for advancing theory and research in management and organisation studies. This book presents an in-depth review of the relevance of Bourdieu’s social theory for organisation and management studies, outlining the key aspects of Bourdieu’s approach and situating his work in its historical and intellectual context of the time. An outline of the treatment of Bourdieusian theory by management and organisation scholars and a critique of the selective reception of his work are offered. The fi rst edited collection to explore the benefi ts of Bourdieusian sociology for a management audience, this book is relevant for theory, research, and practice, and will appeal to an international scholarly audience of academics and research students. Routledge Studies in Management, Organizations and Society For a full list of titles in this series, please visit www.routledge.com This series presents innovative work grounded in new realities, addressing issues crucial to an understanding of the contemporary world. This is the world of organised societies, where boundaries between formal and informal, public and private, local and global organisations have been displaced or have vanished, along with other 19th-century dichotomies and oppositions. Man- agement, apart from becoming a specialised profession for a growing number of people, is an everyday activity for most members of modern societies. Similarly, at the level of enquiry, culture and technology, and literature and economics, can no longer be conceived as isolated intellectual fi elds; conventional canons and established mainstreams are contested. Manage- ment, Organisations, and Society addresses these contemporary dynamics of transformation in a manner that transcends disciplinary boundaries, with books that will appeal to researchers, students, and practitioners alike. 19 Managing Corporate Values in 23 Storytelling in Management Diverse National Cultures Practice The challenge of differences Dynamics and implications Philippe d’Iribarne Stefanie Reissner and Victoria Pagan 20 Gossip and Organizations Kathryn Waddington 24 Hierarchy and Organisation Toward a general theory of 21 Leadership as Emotional hierarchical social systems Labour Thomas Diefenbach Management and the ‘managed heart’ 25 Organizing Through Empathy Edited by Marian Iszatt-White Edited by Kathryn Pavlovich and Keiko Krahnke 22 On Being At Work The social construction of 26 Managerial Cultures the employee A comparative historical analysis Nancy Harding David Hanson 27 Management and Organization 31 Sexual Orientation at Work of Temporary Agency Work Contemporary Issues and Edited by Bas Koene, Christina Perspectives Garsten, and Nathalie Galais Edited by Fiona Colgan and Nick Rumens 28 Liquid Organization Zygmunt Bauman and 32 Gender Equality in Public organization theory Services Edited by Jerzy Kociatkiewicz Chasing the dream and Monika Kostera Hazel Conley and Margaret Page 29 Management and Neoliberalism 33 Untold Stories in Organisations Connecting policies and practices Edited by Michal Izak, Linda Alexander Styhre Hitchin, and David Anderson 30 Organizations and the Media 34 Pierre Bourdieu, Organisation, Organizing in a mediatized world and Management Edited by Josef Pallas, Lars Edited by Ahu Tatli, Mustafa Strannegård and Stefan Jonsson Özbilgin, and Mine Karatas-Özkan Other titles in this series: Contrasting Involvements Gender, Identity and the Culture A study of management accounting of Organizations practices in Britain and Germany Edited by Iiris Aaltio and Thomas Ahrens Albert J.
