Abdul Khaleq Minaketan Kar Mohammed Kabir Preface Panic buying is a common human reaction to disasters, but it is notoriously difficult to comprehend and control, especially in times of disasters. Recent evidence implies that the COVID-19 pandemic, war, earthquake, flood, or public health emergency (SARS, MARS) trigger the event. As the effects of environmental crisis take their toll, panic buying falls by the wayside. In addition to the core events triggered by environmental disaster, panic buying causes a series of events on its own. Every big environmental disaster could exacerbate panic buying, so disaster management should include a component for dealing with panic buying. The occurrences of panic buying and large environmental disasters are linked in this book, with an emphasis on the specific period and technique for prevention. It’s the first of its type strategy to organize potential public health emergencies and panic buying manage- ment concepts in the event of a disaster. It starts with an overview of panic buying to establish the concept in a comprehensive way. Then environmental, physical, and mental events that occur during a disaster with temporal relations are discussed. The theoretical basis of panic buying during disasters has been mentioned subsequently to conceptualize the context vividly. The events of panic buying during a disaster have been correlated with the severity, nature, and stage of the disaster in the chap- ters that follow. The book focuses on the prevention strategies with special attention to the pre-disaster, disaster, and post-disaster phases where it emphasizes the rou- tine inclusion of panic buying prevention measures as an emergency preparedness system. Finally, the book encloses the preventive role of public health administra- tion during a disaster to reduce the overall adversities and control panic buying with additional help from artificial intelligence. We tried our best to reduce overlaps among the chapters, albeit there are some overlaps that had to be considered to maintain the individuality of the chapters. Moreover, as an emerging issue, reveal- ing a deeper insight is challenging. Nevertheless, our attempt would create baseline vii viii Preface avenues for further research and exploration on the identified aspects of disaster and panic buying. This book would be a useful resource material for academics, researchers, and policy makers to provide a theoretical basis for panic buying during disasters and episodes of emergencies.
