Science Congress - 2012 was jointly organised by Acharya Nagarjuna University and Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences (APAS) at Dr. H.H. Deichmann Auditorium, in the campus, from 14th - 16th November 2012. The main theme was “Innovations in Sciences, Technology and Mathematics”. The Congress was constituted by a state organizing committee and a local organising committee. Prof K. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU and Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao, Director, CCMB, President APAS were the chief patrons. The programme was inaugurated formally by the honourable Chancellor Shri E. S. L. Narasimhan, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. In his address he had emphasized the role of science in eradication of food scarcity and the revolutionary aspects of Biotechnology. Dr. V. K. Saraswat, Dept. of Defence Research and Development, Director General, DRDO, delivered a distinguished lecture on the role of biotechnology in defence research. All the sessions were headed by Sectional presidents, secretaries and coordinators who were eminent personalities comprising Scientists from various organisations, members of APAS and senior faculty of ANU at various seminar halls in the university. There were lead lectures given by Scientists of International and National repute. On 16th November, an exclusive session of Farmer- Scientist Meet was organized, headed by Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao, Director, CCMB, in which farmers from various districts of the state participated and put forward their views, The Science Congress was started with the session of problems in farming. The scientists involved in the session Children’s Science Congress. Children from various schools suggested remedial measures to overcome difficulties in and colleges participated with excellent scientific exhibits in farming. ANU COLLEGE OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES ANU College of Pharmaceutical Sciences organized a UGC sponsored National Seminar on 9th & 10th November 2012 on the theme Innovative Research and Development in Pharmaceutical Sciences- Current Scenario and New Horizons. The inaugural function was presided over by Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor. Sri G. Palleswara Rao, (Vice-President, Hetero Labs Ltd.) was the Chief Guest, while Prof. R.R.L. Kantam was the Guest of Honour, and Prof. A. Prameela Rani, the Principal of the college was the Seminar Director. The resource persons were Sri Y. Ramalingeswara Rao, Project Manager, Novartis Ltd., Sri G.Venkata Ramana, Senior scientist-II, FR&D, Derrigo Laboratories, Dr. R. Prizes were Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharamacognosy, awarded for the best two presentations in each category. 4 DEDPEAPRATRMTEMNET NOTF ORFU RBAIOL -DCEHVEEMLOISPTMREYNT DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION The Department of Journalism and Mass The Department of Rural Development, ANU Communication, ANU, conducted a UGC sponsored organized a National Seminar on Voluntary Action in national seminar on Agricultural Innovations and Mass India: Problems and Prospects during December 10th- Media Approaches from 29.11.12 to 30.11.2012. Commerce and Law. DR. AMBEDKAR CHAIR Centre for Dr. Ambedkar Chair (Social Policy & Social Action) organized a National Seminar on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar on Education during December 3-4-2012. Prof. M. Nancharaiah, Dean, School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad, delivered the keynote address. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K.V. Rao presided over the inaugural function, while the Guests of Honour were Prof. T. Uma Maheswara Rao, Principal, ANU College of Arts, Commerce & Law; Prof. Y. P. Ramasubbaiah, Rector; Prof. R.R.L. Murali Mohan was the Director of the seminar. 5 NATIONAL SEMINAR ON EMERGING TRENDS IN COMMERCIAL BANKING IN INDIA The Department of Commerce & Business Administration, ANU organized a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Emerging Trends in Commercial Banking in India, on 12th & 13th, October 2012. Prof. Noorbasha Abdul, Head of the Department, was the Seminar Director. More than 100 participants presented papers on divergent sub- themes relating to the seminar topic. Prof. K. V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the University, inaugurated the seminar as the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address Prof. Rao maintained that the Commercial banking system in India had got strong fundamentals because of which our banks were safe and undisturbed even during the times of recent global crisis. Mr. H. Sambasiva Rao, AGM, Andhra Bank, delivered the keynote address. He said that the Banks have spread their branch network and credit operations to the rural areas during the post- nationalization period. DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES Wildlife Week Celebrations 09-10-2012 On the eve of the Wildlife Week-2012, the Department of Environmental Sciences organized an essay writing competition on “Role of Wildlife in Environmental Protection” in Telugu and English on 3-10-2012 for the University Campus Students. Prizes were distributed to the winners in English and Telugu competition separately. The prizes were given away in a One Day Workshop on Role of Wildlife in Environmental Protection organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences on 9-10-2012. Prof. Y.P. Ramasubbaiah, Rector, ANU, delivered the Inaugural Address while Sri K. Lakshmipathi Kumar, of Merit were distributed to the winners of the competition Regional Officer, AP Pollution Control Board, Guntur, by Prof. A.V. Dattatreya Rao, Principal, University College delivered the keynote address. Sri D. Tirupathi Reddy, of Sciences, and Prof. Z. Vishnuvardhan, OSD, ANU. Dr. Coordinator, Green Corps, Guntur District delivered special A.V.V.S. Swamy, Coordinator, Dept. of Environmental lecture on the day. Prof. R.R.L. Kantham, Registrar, ANU Sciences, Dr. P. ANU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY NSS students of University College of Engineering & Technology participated in “Largest Barefoot Walk for Guinness World Record” attempt organized by National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, ANU from J.K.C.College Road to Ring Road (Don Bosco), Guntur on 12-12-2012. About 300 Students participated under the direction of the Programme Officer Ch. Ravi Kumar in that Programme. DEPT. OF TELUGU UGC – NET COACHING SCHEME The preparatory session for the Fourth World Telugu UGC-NET Coaching classes were conducted for SC, Conference was held in the Dept. of Telugu on November ST, BC and Minority students during November 20 - 30, 2012. NATIONAL INTEGRATION WEEK (19 - 25 NOVEMBER, 2012) As per the directions of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the National Integration Week (19th to 25th November, 2012) was celebrated in all the University Colleges, to foster and reinforce Communal Harmony and National Integration among the members of the University community. The Gandhian Studies Centre conducted the activities pertaining to the National Integration Week. National Integration Pledge was administered to the university community by Prof. K.V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Acharya Nagarjuna University on 19.11.2012. On the eve of the Flag Day on 23.11.2012, donations were collected amounting to Rs. 7027/- from all sections of the University Community for the welfare of the displaced children affected by communal violence. AMBEDKAR Centre for Gandhian Studies celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi in the campus on October 2, 2012. Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.V. Rao addressed the University community on the occasion. Prizes were given away to the winners of the various literary events conducted by the Centre to commemorate Gandhi Jayanthi. A “Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC-V)” was conducted by ‘10(A) Girls BN’ in Acharya Nagarjuna 123rd DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF PHOOLEY University during 19th- 28th November, 2012 in which 25 cadets attended from the University. They were under the command of `SGT Shaik Mashum`. This camp consisted of NCC Day Parade which was successfully held on university campus grounds. One more “Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC)” was held in Chirala with 10 cadets from the University College of Engineering and Technology. INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISABLED PERSONS Mahatma Jyoti Rao Phooley’s 123rd Death Anniversary was celebrated in the university campus on 28-11-2012. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K.V. Rao, the Rector, Prof. Y.P. Ramasubbaiah, OSD Prof. Z. Vishnuvardhan and other officials, faculty, non-teaching staff and students paid homage to the great reformer.
