Our first tip of the hat goes to the US National Science Foundation (Grant #SBR-9816627), whose directoratthetime,PaulChapin, sawthepotentialintheprojectandprovided muchusefuladviceontheNSFprocess, aswellasonsomescientificdetails. NSF funded the project in its initial stages, from 1999–2002. Dr. Diebold, Professor Emeritus at the University ofArizona, hasthus continued hisunparalleled support forClassical and Indo-European linguistics withhisgenerous subsidies forthisproject. Of the several institutions that have participated in one way or another, three are prominent: first, Penn State University, specifically the College of LiberalArtsandtheDepartmentofClassicsandAncientMediterraneanStud- ies, hasprovidedthehomebasefortheprojectsincethebeginning. Fromthe staff managing the budgets and other bureaucratic details (Trish Alexander, Vicki Blazer, Rhonda Decker, Sandi Moyer, Rose Niman) to the faculty of the department (especially Garrett Fagan, Stephen Wheeler, Dan Berman, Markus Asper and Gonzalo Rubio) to the administration (Gary Knoppers, Paul Harvey), there has always been a gratifying willingness on the part of these individuals to share their expertise at all levels. Similar words of ap- preciationgototheDepartmentofLinguisticsoftheUniversityofBergamo, which hosted our first meeting in excellent style, and especially to our col- leaguesGiulianoBerniniandProfessorAlbertoCastoldi, RettoreoftheUni- versity, both of whom gave continuous and generous support to the project: vi Acknowledgments theydeservespecialthanks.Further,weacknowledgetheDepartmentofLin- guistics of the University of Pavia (especially Paolo Ramat, chair, and Anna GiacaloneRamat)fortheirsupportandfortheircollegiality, andforgivingus access to the resources of the department. We also thank the Department of Classics of the University of Bologna (especially Gualtiero Calboli, Sandra Bertocchi and Mirka Maraldi) for hosting a mini-conference in the summer of2003. Individual thanks are owed to the following people, who all participated in some organic way in this project over the years: first of all to our project advisors (BrentVine,ChristianLehmannandBernardComrie)foraccepting our invitation and for sharing their experience and wise counsel with us at various stages of the project; to Barbara Bullock, Jacqueline Toribio (Univ. of Texas); Richard Page (Penn State); Gary Miller (Univ. of Florida); Harm Pinkster(Univ.ofAmsterdam);MichaelHillen(ThesaurusLinguaeLatinae, Munich); the Mouton de Gruyter staff (especially Anke Beck, Birgit Sie- vert,WolfgangKonwitschny,ChristophEyrich[typesetter]); Heather(Heidi) HeidrichandNicholasKarl, oureditorial assistants; andourcopy-editor, Pe- terT.Daniels.
