Introduction Thepresentstudyispartofanongoingrevisionofgeneric limits inthe Senecioneae ofthe GreaterAntilles, particularly Cuba and Hispaniola. It has been necessary to distinguishanumberofnewgenera, someofwhicharestillinsufficientlyknowninall details and deserving a closer study. The treatment ofthe tribe Senecioneae in the GreaterAntilleshasuptonoworrecentlybeenveryconservative, withmostspecies remaininginanover-expandedconceptofSenecioL.,plusanumberoftransferstothe poorly understoodand ill-defmedgenusPentacaliaCass. The Jamaican Senecioneae were sorted out in a preliminary way by Nordenstam (1978), who recognized two new endemic genera, viz. Odontocline B. Nord. and Jacmaia B. NoRD.These were accepted by H. Robinson in Proctor (1982), who howeveraddedthegenusPentacaliawith threeJamaican species (two describedas newandonetransferredfromSenecio). IntheFloradeCubavol.5(Alain 1963)thetribeSenecioneaewasrepresentedbyfour genera.Three ofthese arequite small, namelyErechtites with one species (plusone variety), Emilia with two species, and the monotypic and endemic Shafera. In Senecio21 specieswererecognized, includingthetypespecies,S. vulgaris, whichis awidespreadannualweed, although uncommoninCuba.Theother20specieslisted underSenecioareall indigenousshrubsorvines, mostofthemendemictoCuba, but twoofthemalsooccurringonHispaniola(S.plumbeusandS. trineums). InHispaniola(Haiti andtheDominicanRepublic)threesmall endemicgenerahave beenrecognized,viz.HerodotiaUrb.,MaltfeldiaUrb. andEkmaniopappusBorhidi. Twelvespeciesofshrubs, smalltreesorvineshavebeentraditionallybeenplacedin Senecio(Liogier 1996).Oneparticularlydeviatingtaxonisdescribedelsewhereasthe new genus Igmirbia B. Nord. (Nordenstam 2006). Further genera ofthe tribe in HispaniolaarethemoreorlessweedyErechtites,Emiliaand Crassocephalum. Some ten years after Robinson and Proctor, Borhidi followed their track and transferred anothereleven Cuban species and one from the Dominican Republic to Pentacalia. He also described a new species from Cuba as Pentacalia acunae Borhidi, relatedtoP.almironcillo(Borhidi 1992). Noneofthesetransferredspeciesis wellplacedinPentacalia,whichinthebroadsenseofRobinson,Cuatrecasasa.o.,is a largeAndean genus with a northern limit in Costa Rica, where the northernmost outposto^paramovegetationisfound.WithinthebroadconceptoiPentacaliathere are(atleast)twodistinctgroups, treatedassubgenerabyCuatrecasas,Robinsonand others, but better treated as genera, as by Jeffrey, Bremer and myself Pentacalia sensustrictocomprisesvinesorepiphytes, whereasMonticaliaC.Jeffreyisagenus oferect shrubs with closely set leaves and terminal synflorescences. Leonis thnewa is a vine which occurs in Cuba and Hispaniola (both Haiti and Dominican Republic). The generic name is simply adopted from the epithet ofthe synonym Senecio leonis Britton & Wilson. Leonis agrees with Antillanthus and some other genera in having continuous stigmatic areas on disc-floret styles. The synflorescences are axillary along the rather slender scandent stems. The plant is stronglyresiniferouswithdistinct,oftenblackishresinductsinphyllaries,disc-floret corollaandstyle. When Urban described Senecio domingensis he remarked that it has no related Antilleantaxa("Nullialiiexantillanisaffmis").Thereisnothingtodistinguishitfrom S. trineura, however, and it is strange that Urban overlooked this widespread species. The species is quite variable, which is perhaps not surprising in view ofits wide distribution on the two largest islands ofthe GreaterAntilles.
